California Condition maintained 104 gardens, but also gave up four products and checked absolutely overmatched behind a patchwork unpleasant range. On the next take, Manti Te'o required a fumble that protection Zeke Motta scooped up and ran rear for a 29-yard credit ranking, providing Notre Dame the 7-0 direct it probably sensed it should have had a few times previously.Florida Condition, meanwhile, sputtered and sputtered and sputtered behind a freshman-laden unpleasant range. But Notre Dame didn't work out much better, with Rees completing the 50 % 5-of-10 for 41 gardens and Floyd losing a blast that would have been a landing in the second one fourth.

Decades Later, a Cold War Secret Is Revealed

DANBURY, Conn. – For more than a decade they toiled in the strange, boxy-looking building on the hill above the municipal airport, the building with no windows (except in the cafeteria), the building filled with secrets. They wore protective white jumpsuits, and had to walk through air-shower chambers before entering the sanitized "cleanroom" where the equipment was stored. They spoke in code.Few knew the true identity of "the customer" they met in a smoke-filled, wood-paneled conference room where the phone lines were scrambled. When they traveled, they sometimes used false names. At one point in the 1970s there were more than 1,000 people in the Danbury area working on The Secret. And though they worked long hours under intense deadlines, sometimes missing family holidays and anniversaries, they could tell no one — not even their wives and children — what they did. They were engineers, scientists, draftsmen and inventors — "real cloak-and-dagger guys," says Fred Marra, 78, with a hearty laugh. He is sitting in the food court at the Danbury Fair mall, where a group of retired co-workers from the former Perkin-Elmer Corp. gather for a weekly coffee. Gray-haired now and hard of hearing, they have been meeting here for 18 years. UGG Roxy Tall BootsThey while away a few hours nattering about golf and politics, ailments and grandchildren. But until recently, they were forbidden to speak about the greatest achievement of their professional lives."Ah, Hexagon," Ed Newton says, gleefully exhaling the word that stills feels almost treasonous to utter in public. It was dubbed "Big Bird" and it was considered the most successful space spy satellite program of the Cold War era. From 1971 to 1986 a total of 20 satellites were launched, each containing 60 miles of film and sophisticated cameras that orbited the earth snapping vast, panoramic photographs of the Soviet Union, China and other potential foes. The film was shot back through the earth's atmosphere in buckets that parachuted over the Pacific Ocean, where C-130 Air Force planes snagged them with grappling hooks. The scale, ambition and sheer ingenuity of Hexagon KH-9 was breathtaking. The fact that 19 out of 20 launches were successful (the final mission blew up because the booster rockets failed) is astonishing. So too is the human tale of the 45-year-old secret that many took to their graves.Hexagon was declassified in September. Finally Marra, Newton and others can tell the world what they worked on all those years at "the office.""My name is Al Gayhart and I built spy satellites for a living," announced the 64-year-old retired engineer to the stunned bartender in his local tavern as soon as he learned of the declassification. He proudly repeats the line any chance he gets."It was intensely demanding, thrilling and the greatest experience of my life," says Gayhart, who was hired straight from college and was one of the youngest members of the Hexagon "brotherhood".He describes the white-hot excitement as teams pored over hand-drawings and worked on endless technical problems, using "slide-rules and advanced degrees", knowing they were part of such a complicated space project. The intensity would increase as launch deadlines loomed and on the days when "the customer" — the CIA and later the Air Force — came for briefings. On at least one occasion, former President George H.W. Bush, who was then CIA director, flew into Danbury for a tour of the plant.Though other companies were part of the project — Eastman Kodak made the film and Lockheed Corp. built the satellite — the cameras and optics systems were all made at Perkin-Elmer, then the biggest employer in Danbury."There were many days we arrived in the dark and left in the dark," says retired engineer Paul Brickmeier, 70. Cheap Ugg Boots He recalls the very first briefing on Hexagon after Perkin-Elmer was awarded the top secret contract in 1966. Looking around the room at his 30 or so colleagues, Brickmeier thought, "How on Earth is this going to be possible?"One thing that made it possible was a hiring frenzy that attracted the attention of top engineers from around the Northeast. Perkin-Elmer also commissioned a new 270,000-square-foot building for Hexagon — the boxy one on the hill.Waiting for clearance was a surreal experience as family members, neighbors and former employers were grilled by the FBI, and potential hires were questioned about everything from their gambling habits to their sexuality."They wanted to make sure we couldn't be bribed," Marra says.Clearance could take up to a year. During that time, employees worked on relatively minor tasks in a building dubbed "the mushroom tank" — so named because everyone was in the dark about what they had actually been hired for.Joseph Prusak, 76, spent six months in the tank. When he was finally briefed on Hexagon, Prusak, who had worked as an engineer on earlier civil space projects, wondered if he had made the biggest mistake of his life."I thought they were crazy," he says. "They envisaged a satellite that was 60-foot long and 30,000 pounds and supplying film at speeds of 200 inches per second. The precision and complexity blew my mind."Several years later, after numerous successful launches, he was shown what Hexagon was capable of — an image of his own house in suburban Fairfield."This was light years before Google Earth," Prusak said. "And we could clearly see the pool in my backyard."There had been earlier space spy satellites — Corona and Gambit. But neither had the resolution or sophistication of Hexagon, which took close-range pictures of Soviet missiles, submarine pens and air bases, even entire battalions on war exercises.According to the National Reconnaissance Office, a single Hexagon frame covered a ground distance of 370 nautical miles, about the distance from Washington to Cincinnati. Early Hexagons averaged 124 days in space, but as the satellites became more sophisticated, later missions lasted twice as long."At the height of the Cold War, our ability to receive this kind of technical intelligence was incredible," says space historian Dwayne Day. "We needed to know what they were doing and where they were doing it, and in particular if they were preparing to invade Western Europe. Hexagon created a tremendous amount of stability because it meant American decision makers were not operating in the dark."Among other successes, Hexagon is credited with providing crucial information for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1970s.From the outset, secrecy was a huge concern, especially in Danbury, where the intense activity of a relatively small company that had just been awarded a massive contract made it obvious that something big was going on. Inside the plant, it was impossible to disguise the gigantic vacuum thermal chamber where cameras were tested in extreme conditions that simulated space. There was also a "shake, rattle and roll room" to simulate conditions during launch."The question became, how do you hide an elephant?" a National Reconnaissance Office report stated at the time. It decided on a simple response: "What elephant?" Employees were told to ignore any questions from the media, and never confirm the slightest detail about what they worked on.But it was impossible to conceal the launches at Vandenberg Air Force base in California, and aviation magazines made several references to "Big Bird." In 1975, a "60 Minutes" television piece on space reconnaissance described an "Alice in Wonderland" world, where American and Soviet intelligence officials knew of each other's "eyes in the sky" — and other nations did, too — but no one confirmed the programs or spoke about them publicly. For employees at Perkin-Elmer, the vow of secrecy was considered a mark of honor."We were like the guys who worked on the first atom bomb," said Oscar Berendsohn, 87, who helped design the optics system. "It was more than a sworn oath. We had been entrusted with the security of the country. What greater trust is there?"Even wives — who couldn't contact their husbands or know of their whereabouts when they were traveling — for the most part accepted the secrecy. They knew the jobs were highly classified. They knew not to ask questions."We were born into the World War II generation," says Linda Bronico, whose husband, Al, told her only that he was building test consoles and cables. "We all knew the slogan 'loose lips sink ships.'"And Perkin-Elmer was considered a prized place to work, with good salaries and benefits, golf and softball leagues, lavish summer picnics and dazzling children's Christmas parties."We loved it," Marra says. "It was our life."For Marra and his former co-workers, sharing that life and their long-held secret has unleashed a jumble of emotions, from pride to nostalgia to relief — and in some cases, grief. The city's mayor, Mark Boughton, only discovered that his father had worked on Hexagon when he was invited to speak at an October reunion ceremony on the grounds of the former plant. His father, Donald Boughton, also a former mayor, was too ill to attend and died a few days later.Boughton said for years he and his siblings would pester his father — a draftsman — about what he did. Eventually they realized that the topic was off limits."Learning about Hexagon makes me view him completely differently," Boughton says. "He was more than just my Dad with the hair-trigger temper and passionate opinions about everything. He was a Cold War warrior doing something incredibly important for our nation."For Betty Osterweis the ceremony was bittersweet, too. Not only did she learn about the mystery of her late husband's professional life. She also learned about his final moments."All these years," she said, "I had wondered what exactly had happened" on that terrible day in 1987 when she received a phone call saying her 53-year-old husband, Henry Osterweis, a contract negotiator, had suffered a heart attack on the job. At the reunion she met former co-workers who could offer some comfort that the end had been quick.Standing in the grounds of her late husband's workplace, listening to the tributes, her son and daughter and grandchildren by her side, Osterweis was overwhelmed by the enormity of it all — the sacrifice, the secrecy, the pride."To know that this was more than just a company selling widgets ... that he was negotiating contracts for our country's freedom and security," she said."What a secret. And what a legacy."

Iowa Intends to Impair, Not Explain, GOP Race

URBANDALE, Iowa—The electoral prediction for Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses is dark with a chance of fog. Campaign masters here view this seasons Republican major as one of the most unforeseen in recollection space. Many anticipate the Jan. 3 caucuses will do little to simplify the alternatives for GOP voters who come subsequently."You're going to have a lot of splintering of the governmental election," said Level Lundberg, chairman of the Republican Celebration in Sioux Land, who engaged that this seasons fight is tougher to prediction than any caucus he has took part in since 1976.The Iowa caucuses usually winnow presidential major job areas down to two or three prospects, with the success professing impetus going into New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation major. That may not be the case now, if four or five prospects complete within a few amount points of each other. At this overdue element, with voting less than two months away, symptoms element to a chaotic finish: The state powerful evangelical voters have splintered among several candidates; former Home Speaker Newt Gingrich is seeing his assistance diminish after a brief surge; and former Boston Gov. Glove Romney, who many GOP control see as the most effective general-election selection, has used much less amount of time in the condition than most of his competition. While Messrs. Gingrich and Romney top most country large types by large prices, most public-opinion surveys online in Iowa display as many as five or six Conservatives getting double-digit support. Only Mr. Gingrich has lead 25% assistance this month, and his statistics have since decreased.Adding to the confusion: An applicant that many GOP voters see as out of phase with party orthodoxy on overseas insurance plan, Tx Rep. UGG Argyle Knit Boots Ron John, is well-positioned in Iowa. He used the lead in the last two freely published types of likely caucus-goers, has a effective offer program and money to spend on ads. The possibilities of a John success has some Conservatives in the condition squeamish.Linda Hutchcroft, a Gingrich advocate in Support Pleasurable, known as Mr. Paul's isolationist overseas insurance plan "very scary" and his plan "a little major." She problems that a success for the Tx title could harm Iowa's popular location at the entrance of the nominating work schedule by stoking grievances that the condition is too out of the common audience of nation-wide national politics. "It'd be sad, really sad," she said of a John success in Iowa. A spokesperson for Mr. John, H Howard, known as it "an offend to Iowans'' to say that the state caucuses would be discredited if the title won. Four decades ago in Iowa, a generally connected program of evangelical Honest, home-schooling loved ones associates and flat-tax supports rallied around John Huckabee to increase the cash-strapped former Illinois governor to a first-place complete over Mr. Romney. This period, those constituencies haven't coalesced around 1 substitute to Mr. Romney, in aspect, because several prospects are relationship those voters. On Wednesday, the Family Innovator, an powerful loyality group for Iowa evangelicals, declared it would continue to be fairly neutral in the caucuses. But even as the team's panel select not to choose a preferred, Family Innovator Chief Management Bob Vander Plaats used his weight behind former U.S. Sen. John Santorum of California, whose marketing campaign is designed mostly on an attract public conservatives but who tracks the front-runners by large prices in most Iowa types."He comes from us, not just to us," Mr. Vander Plaats said in asserting his choice. Mr. Vander Plaats went a phase further by hinting the other public conservatives in the competition to phase aside so that their backers could move around 1 selection. He didn't name titles, but his reviews seemed to element to Rep. Michele Bachmann of Mn and Tx Gov. John Perry."You put those [poll] statistics together, and you have a generator selection coming out of Iowa," Mr. Vander Plaats said. "Our worry all along is the conservatives could crack their governmental election."Mrs. Bachmann and Messrs. Gingrich and Perry have obtained recognition from other evangelical control in the condition.Mr. Santorum completed 6 in most types of likely caucus-goers, but his practitioners heralded the Vander Plaats certification as proof of a change. "You're starting to see evangelicals move around Sen. Santorum," said Cody Hoefert, chairman of the Lyon Land GOP and a Santorum backer. At this overdue element, Mr. John seems to have the most effective company on the earth. But Mr. Romney has gently designed his own turnout device.Khayree Fitten, a 17-year-old high-school higher education scholar, reveals the robustness of the Romney function. Still too young to governmental election, he attained out to the Romney marketing campaign captured and was approached by an Iowa key. Now, he is planning precinct boat captains around Support Pleasurable to talk on Mr. Romney's part at each location caucus Jan 3.Many Iowa Conservatives think a John success could help Mr. Romney by sapping impetus from other top challenges to the former Boston governor, especially Messrs. Gingrich and Perry."Mitt Romney benefits, as there is no clear-cut substitute as he minds to New Hampshire," said Tim Albrecht, a top guide to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. Mr. Albrecht labored for Mr. Romney in 2008 but is unaffiliated in this governmental election.Mr. Romney's marketing campaign is planning a three-day bus trip in Iowa next months time as aspect of a overdue power to re-energize the grass-roots program that provided approximately 25% of the governmental election in 2008.His marketing campaign also is investing more than $250,000 on TV ads this months time, according to a count by one media client monitoring the ads. And an outside group assisting Mr. Romney is investing more than $700,000 this months a chance to list his candidacy and criticize his challenges. On Wednesday mid-day, four workers and six volunteers labored the mobile phone devices at Mr. Romney's Iowa head office in Des Moines as the marketing campaign tried to line up precinct control to talk on the candidate's part at caucus events. A dry-erase panel informed volunteers that there were only 14 days until Jan. 3.This seasons competition is different for its outrageous variations. "A complicated caucus complete would be a appropriate cap to the period that was," Mr. Albrecht said. "We have seen various prospects go up and down in the types, and it would be a representation of the movements this period."Mr. Lundberg, the chairman of the Sioux Land GOP, number himself among those Conservatives still trying to create up his mind."This has never occurred to me," he said. "Normally, I get frustrated by all those individuals who can't determine. But this period, I'm really having difficulties."

Smoking linked to skin cancer in women

If you're a woman who smokes and you are looking for another reason to quit, consider this: A new study has found a link between tobacco use and skin cancer. The study found that women who had squamous cell skin cancer were more likely to have smoked than those who were free from the disease. And those who smoked at least 20 years were twice as likely to develop squamous cell skin cancer, a less aggressive form of skin cancer than melanoma. Classic Short Ugg Boots
Men who smoked had a modest risk for the two types of non-melanoma skin cancer -- basal cell and squamous cell cancer -- but the results weren't statistically significant, the study authors noted.
"We don't know why," said study lead author Dana Rollison, referring to the difference between women's and men's risk. Both men and women get a lot of exposure to the sun, the main risk factor for skin cancer, she noted.
But lung cancer research may offer a clue, said Rollison, an associate member in the Moffitt Cancer Center department of cancer epidemiology, in Tampa, Fla. Hormonal differences affecting the metabolization of nicotine and the body's ability to repair damage to lung DNA caused by smoking have been noted before, suggesting that the female hormone estrogen may play a role, she said.
The study, published online in the journal Cancer Causes Control, was done at the Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida, also in Tampa.
For the study, 383 patients with skin cancer were compared to 315 people without the disease. The participants were asked how much they smoked, when they picked up the habit and the total number of years they'd smoked. A total of 355 men and 343 women were included in the study. All were white, the group most at risk for skin cancer. Risks for both types of non-melanoma skin cancer were analyzed separately, compensating for the presence of other risk factors. UGG Boots Outlet
The researchers found that the more people smoked, the more likely they were to have skin cancer, Rollison said. Men who had basal cell skin cancer were significantly more likely to have smoked for at least 20 years than men with no cancer, the study authors noted.
While the study found an association between smoking and skin cancer risk, it did not prove a cause and effect.
Despite the elevated smoking-related risk among women, men overall are more likely to get skin cancer, Rollison noted. She said that "it is possible men's skin is more sensitive to sun exposure than women's."
But another skin cancer expert suggested that men may be less inclined to use sunscreen or other protection when outdoors.
"Although it could just be a genetic difference (between men and women), men tend to have more unprotected sun exposure in their lives," said Dr. Jeffrey Dover, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University Medical School.
Dover said the study findings weren't surprising because "we know cigarette smoke contains carcinogens" and smokers are "blowing the smoke and ash around their faces all day."
The study is important, he added, because "although we have done well, we can do even better" at eliminating smoking as a cause of disease. "This adds more fuel to the idea that smoking has no place in our society." UGG Classic Cardy 5819
Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, where about 2 million cases are treated annually, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Squamous cell cancer occurs in the epidermis, the top layer of skin, and can spread to other organs. Basal cell skin cancer occurs in the dermis, the skin layer beneath the epidermis. While it does not spread to other organs, it is far more common than squamous cell cancer, according to the government agency.

Rescue workers are searching for 49 men in freezing, remote waters off Russia's east coast after their oil rig capsized and sank amid fierce storms on Sunday.By nightfall, four men had been confirmed dead, 14 others had been plucked alive from the churning, icy waters by the ship that had been towing the Kolskaya drilling platform. But the search for the remaining men was hampered by freezing temperatures, a driving blizzard and strong winds. UGG Classic Cardy 5819Dmitry Dmitriyenko, governor of the Murmansk region in Russia's north-west where 33 of the men come from, urged friends and families not to lose hope late Sunday, but admitted the chance of the men surviving in the one degree Celsius water is approaching zero."This is a terrible disaster which took the crew unawares," he said in a statement. "But there is still a chance."The Emergencies Ministry said that 67 people had been aboard the platform as it was being towed about 120 miles off the coast of Sakhalin, a large island just north of Japan in the Sea of Okhotsk in the western Pacific Ocean that until the late 19th century had been the Russian Empire's most remote penal colony.Of the 67 people aboard, 53 were crewmembers and 14 were workers and support staff, RIA Novosti news agency reported.Airplanes and helicopters patrolled the area Sunday, but called their search off just after sunset. UGG Boots AustraliaMinistry officials said two boats will continue the search throughout the night, and the air search team would return with another two ships in the morning. The Transportation Ministry said the platform started sinking after a strong wave broke some of its equipment and the portholes in the crew's dining room. One 16-foot wave washed away its lifeboats, leaving the crew with no escape, and several hours later it sank, officials said. There were no immediate reports of environmental damage -- unlikely as the platform was not drilling for oil when it capsized and carried a negligible amount of fuel. The Kolskaya rig -- 226 feet long and 262 feet wide -- was built in Finland in 1985, and is owned by Russian offshore exploration firm Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka. It carried out work under a contract with Russian energy giant Gazprom.Sakhalin is a largely undeveloped area, dominated by pristine nature. Russia, United States, Europe and Japan have worked off its shores for a nearly decade, producing oil and gas. There have not been any previous significant accidents in the region. UGG Classic Short BootsAs oil and gas fields in Eastern Siberia are becoming depleted, Russian oil and gas companies are starting to shift their focus to offshore projects, unveiling ambitious plans to tap the riches of the Arctic.Earlier this year, Exxon Mobil and Russia's largest oil producer Rosneft teamed up to jointly explore oil and gas fields in the Kara Sea with Exxon pledging $3.2 billion of investment on only three fields. The Investigative Committee on Sunday opened a probe into the accident and said that it might have happened because of a breach of safety regulations, or due to the harsh weather conditions.Alexei Knizhnikov, an energy policy official in Russia for the World Wildlife Fund, told the RIA Novosti that energy companies ought to learn from the accident."This disaster should highlight the high risks of offshore projects," he said. "It's very difficult to conduct efficient rescue operations, whether it's rescuing people or dealing with oil spills, in the weather and conditions of the Arctic."

GOP’s new rules set up long slog to nomination

Mitt Romney, who once hoped to land a knockout blow in January, is now bracing for a protracted months-long battle against Newt Gingrich, pointing to new election rules that make it mathematically impossible for any candidate to clinch the nomination before April 24.Under the rules, which Romney has cited in several recent interviews, most states that vote before April 1 will award their delegates in proportion to the tally, rather than give them all to the candidate who wins a simple majority. A candidate who captures 30 percent of the vote but still loses the state, for example, will still get 30 percent of the delegates. The Republican National Committee adopted the rules last year to make it harder for a candidate to wrap up the nomination early. The committee said the rules, combined with an election calendar that pushes more states to vote later, would force the candidates to campaign across the country, energizing more voters by giving them a greater say in selecting the nominee. UGG Classic ShortThe rules, known as proportional representation, are patterned after the system long used by Democrats to award delegates in their primaries. Republicans looked at the prolonged 2008 Democratic primary between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and believed that, despite its occasional divisiveness, the battle helped excite Democrats and starve the Republican candidate, John McCain, of attention.“McCain sat on the sidelines and couldn’t get a headline and was ignored,’’ said Paul Senft, a Republican National Committee member from Florida who helped draft the new rules. The new system was also designed to discourage states from moving their primaries earlier in the year to garner more attention from the candidates and the media. Because early primary states will divide their delegates under the new rules, they will be less important to the overall race than they were under the old, largely winner-take-all system.“It will make it longer, it will make it a cumulative process, and it will be spread out among the leaders,’’ Senft said. “And it’s debatable whether it will be over and decided by convention time.’’Barbara Norrander, a political scientist at the University of Arizona, said an analysis she conducted showed that if the 2008 Republican primary had used a proportional system, McCain and Romney would have had the same number of delegates after Super Tuesday, on Feb. 5.In that case, Romney would certainly have continued to campaign for weeks more, escalating his fight against McCain. Instead, most of the 21 states that voted that day awarded all of their delegates to McCain, forcing Romney from the race two days later and enabling McCain to secure the nomination on March 4. UGG Classic Cardy 5819In this election, Republicans and Democrats say Romney is ultimately the best equipped to prevail if the race becomes a long nationwide contest. Unlike Gingrich, who is rebuilding his campaign after it collapsed six months ago, Romney has spent months assembling vast fund-raising and organizational networks.

Good taste

Planning ahead for the good doctor's birthday weekend is always wise. He's a Libran. Pondering is part of the process. Will it be a sojourn in the stables of a 19th-century bank in beautifully preserved Beechworth or a luxe architect-designed chalet in the bucolic Buckland Valley?Bags are packed, Provenance is booked and we're Beechworth-bound.Beechworth is a pretty town, verdant in parts - a striking contrast to the rugged boulder-strewn landscape. UGG Classic Short Boots Many of the old colonial buildings crafted from locally quarried granite are heritage listed. Bed and breakfasts, antique stores and tearooms dominate the main street. But our interests lie in local bounty. After putting Myrtleford on the map through former two-hatted restaurant Range, chef Michael Ryan, along with partner and winemaker Jeanette Henderson, moved to Beechworth to open Provenance Restaurant and Luxury Suites. Within months, the restaurant was named The Age Good Food Guide 2010's best new country restaurant and was awarded a chef's hat.Well timed for the 2pm check-in, we angle park outside the grand old Bank of Australasia, walk up the drive and give the towering timber door a nudge. Out comes Ryan in chef's whites, sleeves rolled, taking respite from his mise en place. We follow the host past the kitchen and family residence, wending our way through a lush courtyard garden to the converted carriage-house and stables.Three downstairs suites with fancy outdoor chairs and round marble-topped tables overlook the garden. The upstairs suite has an L-shaped balcony and white wicker setting. While birthday boy morphs into bellboy, I snoop. It's a stylish blend of occidental and oriental, in a neutral palette of ivory, taupe and chocolate brown - spacious for a bed and breakfast. UGG Boots Australia Dark timber bedside tables, a small coffee table and a black lacquered wardrobe salute the East. Local magazines and a nicely bound guide to Provenance and Beechworth share an antique Asian sideboard with a flat-screen TV, CD and DVD. Wall-mounted window screens add an artistic touch and split-system heating and cooling adds comfort. The firm king-size bed, plump with latex pillows and a down-filled duvet dressed in luxury Egyptian cotton linen, promises blissful sleep. In the corner, a compact utility cupboard hides crockery and glassware, a kettle, coffee plunger and a bar fridge stocked with mineral water, milk and that Italian-style fizz. Slide the nearby door to reveal a smart hotel-style spa bathroom with glass-walled rain showers. Plush bath sheets and L'Occitane body products add more luxe. For dinner, we wander to Wardens; there's no shortage of fine diners in Beechworth. Well sated after memorable pasta, we saunter home for that blissful night's sleep.Breakfast in the elegant dining room is deliciously simple. Part buffet, part bespoke. Juice, espresso and chunky house-made muesli packed with macadamias, dates and apricots and doused in yoghurt, honey and sweet strawberries. Croissants, fresh from the oven, are smeared with silky bitter-sweet Seville orange marmalade. And finally, eggs any way and crisp bacon whipped up while you peruse the morning papers. So much food, so little space. We really feel like a siesta. Instead, we trek around town, sample honey, explore the Burke Museum and drive by the diggings. UGG Ultra Short Boots Enough history. Beer o'clock beckons at Bridge Road Brewers. Hand-crafted, full-flavoured, non-pasteurised ales are a speciality.Birthday dinner is served at Provenance and it's exemplary. Vegetarians will rejoice. If it's your first time, go for the degustation menu with matching wines. It's the only way to explore Ryan's imagination, his romance with Europe and obsession with Japan. Think braised rabbit, pea and toasted orzo pilaf; 30-hour ox cheek, cooked low and slow and served on potato and buttermilk puree with candied fennel and smoked beets; and bitter mandarin souffle. After a sleep-in and another sumptuous breakfast, we pack up, check out and head home via Ruffy cafe to stock up on fabulous fennel pickles.

Ernie and Cindy claim $1 million prize on 'Race'

NEW YORK—"The Amazing Race" took its final three teams on a frantic scramble through Atlanta during Sunday's conclusion of the CBS competition show. In the end, it was Ernie Halvorsen and his fiancee Cindy Chiang, both from Chicago, who crossed the finish line at Atlanta's historic Swan House to win the $1 million prize. In second place were Californians Jeremy Cline and Sandy Draghi. In third place were former NFL player Marcus Pollard and his wife Amani, from Pine Mountain, Ga. During this last leg of the round-the-world race, the couples were required to land a jetliner in a flight simulator, find " Cheap Ugg Boots Gone With the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell's home, and plot their 40,000-mile odyssey on a giant world map erected high above the parking lot at Turner Field. But interviewed after the broadcast, the winners said their most unnerving moment was the basic task of getting a cab at Atlanta's airport. "Nobody wanted to take us," Ernie said. "That was the most stressful thing as we saw the other teams departing." Finally a driver volunteered, "and we give him all the rest of our money as a tip," said Cindy. The episode's most comic scene: when Jeremy and Sandy went in search of "the Dump," the name for Mitchell's famous residence, but instead were delivered by their driver to a huge department store called The Dump, where they wasted precious time prowling its aisles in vain to find the clue that wasn't there."This is so nerve-racking," said Draghi when they were back on the road. "I have to get on Prilosec when I get home."

Speed-date with the world's cutest critter

I may be a six-foot tall, thirty-something, red-blooded Australian male, but I've just been reduced to behaviour more fitting for a giggling Japanese schoolgirl."So cute!" I find myself exclaiming. The creature responsible for this is swimming in front me on its back, balancing a block of ice on its not-inconsiderable belly. It's a sea otter, and it's just about the cutest animal I've ever seen. With one day left in Vancouver before heading for the Rocky Mountains, we'd decided to take a quick stroll down to the city's famed Stanley Park on the edge of downtown. The 400-hectare space is one of the largest urban park's in North America, almost entirely surrounded by water. Cheap Ugg Boots While parts of the park are given over to gardens, bike paths, recreation areas and the like, its interior, with its enormous cedar trees, is more like a wilderness area than a city park.Today, however, there's no time for dawdling on the walking trails as we're heading to the Vancouver Aquarium, which is also located in the park boundaries. Usually I'm not one for these purpose-built tourist attractions, but the aquarium comes with a strong reputation and a couple of major selling points - with a focus on the local sea life, the aquarium offers an opportunity to see animals not found in southern waters. Sea otters are a rarity in the waters of Vancouver and its province British Columbia these days, having been hunted voraciously for their fur in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The population is recovering thanks to the importation of several groups of the animals from Alaska, where the aquarium's otters also come from. The incredibly cute critters dart to and fro in their pens, ducking, diving and backstroking around their pools. Unusually for zoo animals, the sea otters are exceptionally active. This is because, unlike most marine mammals, the sea otters have no blubber and have to rely on their thick fur and constant activity to keep warm. The keepers toss them prawns trapped in the chunks of ice, which they grip with their paws or balance on their bellies as they backstroke through the water, chewing their way through to the meat. If the ice chunk is too big, the otters will carry it to the edge of the enclosure and smash it against the wall with their paws to reduce it to a more manageable size. Argyle Knit UGG Boots Along with the sea otters, the other major drawcard are the beautiful, if somewhat goofy looking, beluga whales. The belugas look a little like giant dolphins, with a less aerodynamic head. Their most striking feature though is their colour. They are bone-white – so white in fact, that in the first few photos I take of them they seem to glow in the image.Despite their exotic appearance, belugas are reportedly the most common whale in Canadian waters. Aquarium visitors can watch the graceful animals from both above and below – underwater glass allows for a close-up view. The aquarium is home to five belugas and has had some success with its breeding program. Sadly though, one of the aquarium's two beluga calves died shortly after our visit due to a blockade caused by foreign bodies in her blowhole. The event reignited debate about the captivity of these animals. The aquarium defended its breeding program on research grounds. "What we learn from the responsible breeding of animals can often help to further our understanding of wild populations," said the aquarium in a news release at the time. It's true that several of the animals at the aquarium were taken from the wild in poor condition, including a porpoise and sea turtle, and have been nursed back to health.Beyond the mammals, the aquarium is also home to an impressive array of other life forms – exotic fish, glowing jellies, crustaceans and frogs. UGG Classic Mini 5854More than 70,000 creatures in fact. There's plenty to keep the family occupied for an afternoon and the prices are reasonable too. There's also a '4D' theatre – a 3D film with the added dimension of moving seats, water spray and bubbles. A sea snake scene has the audience shrieking in terror, then laughing uproariously at their own reactions, as their seats jerk when the snake strikes. We finish off our visit with a stroll through the extensive frog display. After seeing one of the world's cutest creatures earlier, here we recognise one of nature's ugliest – it's a cane toad. I trust they are keeping the lid on its enclosure tightly closed.

Running hot and cold

I brace myself. Though it's 80 degrees inside this crowded sauna, outside it's minus 25. My beaming, red-faced Finnish friends insist I'll be converted by my first experience of avantouinti, or ice-hole swimming, so I take a draught of vodka, draw breath and take the plunge. This is my first visit to Finland in the winter. Finland is cold. I hate the cold. But family ties beckon, so here I am at dusk, cocooned in my many layers, at the Rastila camping ground in Helsinki.Avantouinti is a winter tradition in Finland intimately connected with the sauna, the spiritual hearth of all Finns. Find a stretch of frozen water, preferably near a sauna, cut a large hole in the ice and there you have it. There is an ice-hole swimming society and swimming holes are maintained by groups, such as the Finnish ski society.A dip in a frozen lake in the Arctic winter might seem like a form of masochism to most people but hardcore devotees swear it improves circulation, boosts immunity and produces a feeling of well-being second to none. UGG Kensington Boots Immersion in icy water is even claimed by some to have anti-ageing benefits.More than 100,000 Finns go ice swimming at least once a week in winter - about six months, from November to April. The toughest simply strip naked and submerge themselves in water as cold as minus-five degrees for up to a minute. I draw comfort from the fact that novices usually heat up first in the sauna, then plunge into the avanto, or ice hole.So I follow the locals, with whom I'm sitting shoulder to shoulder in the steam. I'm determined to blend in, though I feel a bit ridiculous in the customary felt sauna hat, which protects the head from the intense heat. Attired in my modest swimsuit, I follow everyone else and smear honey on my face, meant to soften the wrinkles, though it melts quickly and trickles into my mouth and stings my eyes. Then I beat myself with a whisk made of birch twigs, also part of the Finnish sauna tradition, said to open the pores and improve circulation.I close my eyes and inhale the clean fresh smell of birch, evoking childhood memories of camping in the national parks of distant eastern Australia. UGG Boots The steam and heat rise with each loyly, the casting of water on to the hot stones of the sauna stove. After a sip of vodka, I take a deep breath, open the door and take the freezing jetty towards the ice hole. There's a handy ladder here and I lower myself step by step, steam rising from my blue-ish body. Soon I'm up to my neck. I splash around like a frozen, flightless bird and, after less than a minute, haul myself out.The effect is odd, yet exhilarating. I'm simultaneously hot and cold. Momentarily I'm distracted by the brightness of the snowy landscape, lit by the moon and pinpricks of stars. There are trails of the aurora borealis in the clear skies. I gasp - perhaps from lack of oxygen or the beauty of a Nordic night.I leave the avanto and skip back to the sauna. My head feels clear, my body full of energy. My conversion is complete.

Vitamin D responsible for difference in blood pressure

It is quite evident that high blood pressure is more common amongst Blacks than Whites and persons with darker skin generally produce less vitamin D, primarily at higher latitudes where UV radiation is less intense and the climate is cooler, leading to less skin exposure. The study has been conducted by Dr. Kevin Fiscella from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, US and his colleagues. The research suggests that low vitamin D level may contribute to elevated blood pressure, which explains why thousands of Blacks die annually from heart disease and stroke. UGG Boots The researchers compared the average systolic blood pressure and blood levels of Vitamin D of Blacks and Whites taking data from the National Health and NutritionExamination Survey 2001-2006 for 1,984 of the former and 5,156 of the later aged 20 years and above. They found that overall, Blacks had significantly lower levels of vitamin D in their blood than Whites and blood levels of vitamin D were linked to systolic blood pressure."Our study adds to the growing body of evidence showing that low levels of vitamin D among Blacks contribute to cardiovascular disparities. We also know that blood pressure is highest among Blacks living in the US, where UV exposure is low. Taken together, these findings point towards vitamin D deficiency as a potential contributor to higher rates of vascular dysfunction, here hypertension among Blacks living in the US. Further, work is required to determine whether vitamin D supplementation could reduce these racial disparities."

Beetroot juice boosts cyclists’ performances

A new study by the University of Exeter has shown that drinking beetroot juice enables competitive-level cyclists to cut down the time it takes to ride a given distance.Beetroot juice is a natural source of nitrate, which is thought to be the active ingredient in affecting athlete’s performance. For the study, nine club-level competitive male cyclists were asked to compete in time trials over 4km and 16.1km.All the riders were asked to do each time trial twice. Each time they drank half a litre of beetroot juice beforehand. On one occasion they had normal beetroot juice, on the other occasion – unbeknown to the triallists – the beetroot juice had a key ingredient, nitrate, removed. The researchers monitored athletes’ VO2 levels (showing the amount of oxygen consumed) during exercise to ensure that the cyclists worked at maximum effort on each occasion. Results showed that when the cyclists drank ordinary beetroot juice they had a higher power output for the same level of effort – suggesting their muscles and cardio-vascular system were being more efficient. UGG Boots On average, riders were 11 seconds quicker over the 4km distance and 45 seconds faster over the 16.1km distance.“This is the first time we’ve studied the effects of beetroot juice, and the high nitrate levels found in it, on simulated competition,” said lead author Professor Andrew Jones, from the University of Exeter.“The findings show an improvement in performance that, at competition level, could make a real difference – particularly in an event like the Tour de France where winning margins can be tight,” he added. The study has been published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

Boys' own adventure

Who wants to hold the family pet?" asks the chief of the Futuna tribe. There's quiet in the small crowd seated on logs in the jungle. "I will!" says the weevily eight-year old with the buzz cut. I regard the boy doubtfully as he springs from his log to stand before the bare-chested man in the warpaint and grass skirt. The pet - a large golden orb spider - is placed in the boy's hand before it strides up his pale, skinny arm. The crowd shudders and, truth is, I fear greatly - for the spider.True to form, the boy - who is mine - drops the arachnid on the black volcanic soil and bends to pick it up by two legs like it's a rubber toy. Aghast, the chief quickly rescues his spider.I'm surprised the family pet isn't minus a limb and I'm astonished to learn why the golden orb is so cherished by tribes here on the main island of Efate and the 82 outer islands of Vanuatu. The chief shows us a wooden frame the size and shape of a paddle, its head thick with silken spider web. UGG Boots Australia "It reflects the sun," the young chief says. "When we're out in our boat, we put it close to the water and small fish jump out and stick to it. We take the small fish and use them to catch bigger fish."Another eight-year-old boy - this one with a round head and thick hair - urgently shoots his hand up and makes an "Ooh! Ooh!" noise. I also regard him with some anxiety for he, too, is mine and prone to lengthy expositions of irrelevance."Yes?" the chief says."Once, in Adelaide ..."I groan in my head, "Oh, god, no, no!" The trouble is, this comes out aloud and the crowd turns to see the source of such mean spirit. Before Vanuatu, overseas holidays with young children have been a breeze because I require only three basic ingredients: a resort pool, a resort kids' club and other kids. (Four ingredients, if you count a nutritious bottle of Bombay Sapphire.) Boys are happy, wife's happy, I'm happy. Then My Family's Crazy Gap Year screened on the ABC and spoiled everything. The globe-trotting reality show suggested children can actually benefit from making cultural connections outside the hibiscus-fringed barricades of holiday retreats.Warwick Le Lagon at Port Vila is a 142-room lagoon-side resort with all my requisite ingredients, namely kind women wearing red T-shirts emblazoned with "Picaninni Crew" and large swimming pools whipped to a lather by excited (mostly Australian) children. But in spite of this, I decide to pre-arrange some non-resort family activities."Dad, can we go to the kids' club?""No, we've got family activities."Their disappointed "ohhhhh" is rich and cadenced. "C'mon, you'll like it!" I say. "You enjoyed the village, didn't you?"They can't deny it: the Ekasup Cultural Village, with its spider paddle, was a hit the minute we'd walked a dense jungle gauntlet with armed warriors hissing at us, rattling seed pods and firing fierce challenges in tribal dialect. There had been talk of hunting and war and cannibalism and the boys had soaked it all up. At the end of the two-hour show, I'd chatted to the chief about his business and the cost of education, while his kids had joined mine to play chasey around a magnificent banyan tree.I'm not sure it can get any better. But it seems it can on this decidedly chilled-out island. We take a cab to the Mele Cascades, a half-hour ride from the resort. The taxi driver is from an outer island and though wearing neither skirt nor warpaint, he gives a fascinating account of a life so different from ours. "To marry my wife I had to pay 40 pigs," he tells the boys through his rear-view mirror. "And a pig costs 400 Australian dollars."I consider this an opportunity to test the boys' arithmetic but the poor chap tells us he's still paying off the price of his bride - and she's stuck on their home island, two days' sailing from Vila."How often do you see her?" asks the weevil."Once a year," he says."Can't you take your taxi there?""No. There are no cars on my island. My wife has never been in a car. Only ever in a canoe.""Hmm," says the irrelevant one. "Like a war canoe?"The waterfall trip turns into another family triumph. We walk an easy track, following a wide stream into a volcanic heartland that looks like it could harbour dinosaurs. It starts to rain - hard, warm rain - but this only adds to the adventure. We reach the waterfall, a great bumpy cascade hammering into a cusp of jungle. We find coves behind the falls where we call and scream behind the roaring curtains of water. The boys declare it "wicked awesome".Next day we walk into the wonky little capital, Port Vila, where the Vanuatu Cultural Centre makes more sense to the boys after the village visit. They learn that the chief's tales of cannibalism were quite true and discover the fabulous value of pig tusks, which connects with the taxi driver's story. They also watch a terrific video of the land divers of Pentecost Island, who throw themselves off 30-metre towers with their feet tied to vines. "Can we go there, dad?""Gee, I'd love to." On day five we take a boat about 200 metres offshore to a small island called Hideaway. It's a rustic little outcrop of basalt and sand with a basic but very pleasant resort. We have four hours to laze, swim and snorkel. A glass-bottom boat takes parties out to the reef, where great fish schools cluster around chutes that release breadcrumbs. A passenger from Queensland lowers his waterproof camera into the water to watch the feeding frenzy and a giant snapper momentarily swallows it. UGG Classic Cardy Boots The weevil can barely contain his excitement when the camera - hurriedly retrieved with a great splash - replays its footage. But Hideaway is a hit for a completely unexpected reason. It's home to "the world's only underwater post office", which is nothing more than a fibreglass bell submerged about four metres in the warm turquoise water. One of the island's divers is sent out to sit in the bell for an hour at noon; we take a deep breath and duck down to give him our waterproof postcard. He takes the card, gestures "OK" and shakes our hands. We shoot up to the surface and rip out our snorkels - not to catch our breath but to laugh. Never has so much pleasure been afforded by something so simple. On the last day I think I outdo myself: we join an off-road island tour driving "fun buggies". The weevil and I buckle into our feral 250cc off-roader, while wife and irrelevance boy take to another. All of us are given ridiculous (probably useless) safety helmets but the boys are ecstatic with their hard hats protruding with horns and spikes. In a line of a dozen vehicles, we power across fields and beaches, kicking up mud, sand and cow poo on a four-hour drive. Frankly, if the noise of the machines was unleashed on any other island I suspect legal action would be taken. But on rough tracks through the thatched villages of Efate, it brings kids running to high-five us as we slow our vehicles. UGG Classic Tall Boots When we return to the resort lobby, the boys gather around me, their flushed, mud-spattered faces looking happily up into mine. "We love you, dad," they say, taking turns to embrace me. "Thanks for the best holiday ever." Actually, not a word of this last bit is true: they badger me until I agree to let them go to the kids' club, then they race off towards the kind women in red T-shirts - screaming and karate kicking all the way - which at least leaves me and the wife to sneak off to our room for an appointment with Dr Bombay.

Better body image helps weight loss

Improving body image helps in weight loss programs based on diet and exercise.Obesity is known to increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease and can significantly shorten life expectancy.Technical University of Lisbon`s Pedro J. Teixeira, who led the research, said: "Body image problems are very common amongst overweight and obese people, often leading to comfort eating and more rigid eating patterns, and are obstacles to losing weight.""Our results showed a strong correlation between improvements in body image, especially in reducing anxiety about other peoples` opinions, and positive changes in eating behaviour." Researchers from Technical and Bangor universities (Spain and Britain, respectively) enrolled overweight and obese women on a year-long weight loss programme, reports the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. Half the women were given general health information about good nutrition, stress management, and the importance of looking after themselves, according to a Technical University statement. Cheap Ugg Boots The other half attended 30 weekly group sessions where issues such as exercise, emotional eating, improving body image and the recognition of, and how to overcome, personal barriers to weight loss and lapses from the diet were discussed.Women in the second group found that the way they thought about their body improved and that concerns about body shape and size were reduced.Compared to the first group, they were better able to self-regulate their eating and they lost much more weight, losing ann average seven percent of their starting weight compared to less than two percent for the first group.

Zynga prices shares between $8.50 and $10

The social gaming juggernaut on Friday told potential investors that it planned to price its stock between $8.50 and $10 a share in order to raise up to $1.15 billion. The price range implies that the San Francisco-based company that began a little more than four years ago with an online poker game on Facebook could be worth up to $9 billion. Zynga's initial public offering has been one of the most anticipated of the year since the company in July declared its intent to sell its shares on Nasdaq. But the company held off its IPO when the stock markets collapsed mid-August. The European financial crisis that ensued further eroded investor confidence. Given that global financial markets remain highly volatile, Zynga's decision to press play on its public offering this month is somewhat vexing. Furthermore, few companies choose to go public in December, when mutual fund managers who are likely buyers are loathe to make risky bets that can upset their portfolios' performance for the entire year at the last minute. But the maker of FarmVille, CityVille and other social games is apparently confident it can overcome those difficulties. Cheap Ugg Boots Its executives are set to begin a road show Monday to meet with potential investors in an effort to drum up excitement for the company, culminating two weeks later in the stock's debut on Nasdaq. A lot can happen in that period of time as investors grill Zynga's officials on the company's business plans, its ability to consistently turn big profits and its ability to maintain its torrid growth pace. Depending on how well the company satisfies those questions, the amount Zynga ultimately fetches can fluctuate right up to the minute before its shares hit the trading floor. Zynga has already anticipated some of those concerns in a series of documents it has filed since July with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission outlining its financial performance and arguing that the market for online social games is poised to explode, nabbing a significant share of the $49 billion video game market that has thus far been dominated by console games. The company, whose games are played by more than 150 million users a month, last year made a profit of $90.6 million on $597.5 million in revenue, largely from advertising and selling virtual goods for its games, which include Mafia Wars, Zynga Poker and Words with Friends. A year earlier, Zynga reported a $52.8 million loss on $121.5 million in sales.

Like tiny fish through a net, key taps dropped from memory

The reason the SMS contents and key taps are monitored at all is so they can be used to invoke Carrier IQ programming interfaces, he continued. Messages or key sequences that contain proprietary tags can be used to manually upload diagnostic information. Those that contain the special formatting dissolve into the ether as soon as they come in. “The content of the SMS is never stored and never transmitted,” Coward said. His version of the software has been confirmed by Dan Rosenberg, an Android security researcher who has reverse engineered Carrier IQ UGG Classic Short Boots and examined the underlying machine language. He said he took the undertaking after viewing a video demonstration posted on Monday that showed the software echoing the precise key taps developer Trevor Eckhart typed into his HTC EVO handset. “What the video is depicting is the application printing out what are known as bugging logs,” he said. “It's a way that applications keep a temporary record of the things they were doing so if anything were to break, a developer could go and read that record and figure out what went wrong. That's very different from the application actually recording that information and sending it off to the carrier.”

Love and the judge

We're all on a journey ... former High Court judge Michael Kirby. Photo: Peter Braig He has talked Rosetta Stone at length of his landmark legal rulings, now Michael Kirby and his partner of 41 years tell, for the first time, of a love the law is still catching up with. Neil McMahon reports. AS MICHAEL KIRBY knows well, some things add up only with hindsight and even then the future can have other ideas. The law, for instance, can take its time to make sense and still later change its mind. Love is even more fickle. Life is a puzzle and Kirby's life is a case in point. If the sum of it makes sense today, the living of it can appear a journey far less certain. He is 71 now, seemingly serene and therefore more comfortable describing the verities that have sustained him than he is harping on doubts that might once have plagued his peace of mind. There are so many things Kirby says he has never had to question: a loving family that always embraced him; an intellect that rarely failed him; a career that fulfilled him; a quiet but consistent faith in God; and perhaps the defining pillar of his life, a relationship that began 41 years ago, and which thrives today. Kirby is talking about the love of his life, and the secret he slowly surrendered to pursue a grand, lifelong love affair. Advertisement: Story continues below "Pretty heroic," Kirby says with a smile of his relationship with Johan van Vloten. He is describing its length but he might as well be hailing its survival: from its beginnings in a world very different from today's acceptance of gay people; through decades of public secrecy; an unusual coming out when Kirby was on the High Court; a tawdry but baseless political scandal with the couple at its centre; and, finally now, the first detailed public recounting by both men of a love Kirby describes as "my great blessing". Van Vloten has never before spoken publicly. He has been coaxed on to the public stage for an ABC documentary on Kirby's life, to air next Sunday. In it, he at last pairs his voice with his partner's to give viewers an intimate look at their relationship and, surely, the nation's first close-up examination of any gay romance of such duration. As Kirby tells it, when he came out in 1999 via a discreet change to his Who's Who entry it was van Vloten who was the instigator. "He Rosetta Stone Software said we owed it to the younger generation. He wasn't so concerned about the politicians, he was concerned about young people who had gone through a similar life to ourselves." Now, once more, they are cast as teachers of sorts the focus on their relationship again playing its part in changing the way Australians view gay people. In our conversation it is clear Kirby is delighted to publicly celebrate his love and to have van Vloten do it with him. "I'm very proud of him," Kirby says of his partner's TV appearance. But he hopes people come away from this interview and next week's program not celebrating them as something special but recognising the everyday simplicity of a relationship that just happens to be between two men. "In fact," he says, "I think the whole thing is a bit boring, but most human lives are boring. But the boringness of it is a very important message to get over to fellow citizens. It's not the whole of either of us, Johan and me, but it is a great blessing to us." It began in early 1969, when both men were 29. Kirby had just endured the end of his first love affair, with a Spaniard he had met at a gay bar in Sydney. When the Spanish man left town, the young lawyer brushed off a bruised heart and ventured out again. "I remember being at my apartment in Kirribilli and looking out at all the little lights [across the harbour] in Sydney and the eastern suburbs and thinking, 'There must be someone out there.' And then I went in by the ferry." Call it fate. Van Vloten was out for a drink, too. He remembers the night just as clearly, including Kirby's opening conversational gambit: an eccentric dash of German history. "He was dressed in a very odd combination Learn American English of clothes," van Vloten recalled to the ABC.

The semi-traditional courts

Today it is taboo to talk about Hutus or Tutsis and the push to create a sense of unity on the Rosetta Stone population is visible everywhere. Each place we visit has its own memorials to those lost in the violence. Road signs that elsewhere would caution against speeding, in Rwanda remind people to stand together for fear of another genocide. The semi-traditional courts that have tried most of those accused of genocide are due to be wound up this year and the country seems ready and determined to look to the future. Most importantly, perhaps, Rwanda is stable. In November the country became the newest member of the Commonwealth - only the second country not formerly a British colony to be admitted (after Mozambique). The move came after English became the official language for schools to teach in, ousting French in . The sense of optimism created by the fast-growing economy, reduced corruption and decreasing crime rate has brought Rwandans from neighbouring Uganda and Burundi flooding home. The government seems anxious to make sure that the rapid growth doesn't damage the environment and the country has a head start because of Rwandans' fierce sense of civic pride. On the last Saturday of each month, every citizen over the age of 18 must take part in umuganda, or communal work. Businesses are closed and everyone spends the day improving their neighbourhoods. As a result, Rwanda is remarkably litter free and when our driver, Twalib, suspects I am about to drop a soft-drink can he almost wrestles me to the ground in horror. There is a breathtaking Rosetta Stone Hindi V3 amount of beauty to protect. We arrive in time for a dawn drive to Volcanoes National Park. The road coils around the hills, passing terraced fields and roadside markets with men and women carrying baskets, bushels of banana leaves and even carpets on their heads. Our destination is the volcanic range called the Virungas, home to Rwanda's famous mountain gorillas. There are about 750 left in the wild and they're carefully protected. Only about 50 people a day are allowed to trek to see them, with each group of visitors allowed an audience with the gorillas for one hour. Our walk starts among the eucalyptus groves of the valley, where excited children chase us along the road, taking time out from their chores to show us their tree-climbing skills. Our group of five is accompanied by a guide, trackers and a ranger with a gun to scare away stray buffalo. Many rangers are poachers turned gamekeepers; in a bid to stop people from nearby farms poaching the park's animals, they were given jobs here. Slipping and sliding up the muddy hillside, we walk through eerie bamboo forests and yelp in fields of stinging nettles. The ground beneath us is a tangle of roots and stalks and as difficult to balance on as a cat's cradle. But the views are incredible. In the distance are the jagged edges of three of the volcanoes that give the park its name; below Rosetta Stone Portuguese us the farmland with its black volcanic soil and all around the changing green of the hills.

There is some sizzle

Now comes Alderman's SexGen suit, which was filed July 3 and seeks unspecified damages. It Rosetta Stone V3 accuses the unknown owner of the Catteneo avatar of violating copyright and trademark protections by copying, distributing and selling copies of Alderman's software. Alderman's attorney, Francis X. Taney Jr. of Philadelphia, said the lawsuit has gotten a lot of attention because it involves sex, but is fundamentally about long-established law. "It's a piece of software and software is copyrightable," Taney said. "It's also expressed in graphics, which also are copyrightable. There is some sizzle. People like to say it's really far out there, but at the end of the day I equate it to basic intellectual property principles." Unlike many popular online worlds, such as "World of Warcraft," Linden Lab grants its users broad rights to create and sell content with few restrictions. Users can install copy protection and seek U.S. copyright and trademark protections, all of which Alderman did for the SexGen software. "Whenever you create a situation where people are buying and selling things and potentially misappropriating them from their rightful owners, it is only a matter of time before the legal system gets called in," said Fred von Lohmann, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. "This seems like a relatively straightforward case. It sounds like there is a real copyright issue." Taney believes he knows who Catteneo is in real life, but is confirming it through subpoenas of records of eBay Inc.'s PayPal payment service as Rosetta Stone Spanish Spain well as chat logs and trade history in "Second Life." He said Linden Lab and PayPal turned over their records, and he is preparing another round of subpoenas. "We're proceeding carefully," Taney said. "This guy has claimed the information he gave to Linden was bogus. We are looking for ways to cross check and corroborate the information." Catteneo, who did not respond to several interview requests sent through the "Second Life" messaging system, will likely have a hard time hiding. "There is a whole lot less anonymity online than people think," von Lohmann said. "There are over ,000 people who have been sued for downloading music. They may have felt anonymous, but they're weren't." Alderman is unlikely to be the last to drag an avatar into court as the designers in "Second Life" try to protect their creations in the same way clothing designers such as Gucci try to eliminate realistic knockoffs In recognition of the growing legal issues "Second Life" is likely to generate, the country of Portugal recently set up an arbitration center in the virtual world, though it has no power to enforce its decisions. The legal issues may be similar offline and online, but von Lohmann said the trials could be a lot more interesting. "In a virtual world, you have the ability to gather evidence you don't have in the real world," he Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 said. "Everything that happens in 'Second Life' is reflected on computer servers. Depending on how long they keep the records, you could actually replay the event as it happens."
