Former Malaysian PM to speak at Victoria

31 October 2006Former Malaysian PM to speak atVictoriaThe former Prime Rosetta Stone V3 Minister of Malaysia, Tun DrMahathir bin Mohamad, is to deliver the 2006 Chair of MalayStudies Saad Lecture at Victoria University on November7.Dr Mahathir, who was Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003,will argue that the path to peaceful resolution of disputesis to criminalise war. Dr Mahathir has been privatelyinvolved in attempts to initiate peace talks with Islamicinsurgents in Thailands Muslim-dominated southernprovinces. In a prxE9,cis of his speech, CriminaliseWar,The Path to Peaceful Resolution, Dr Mahathir said thesanctioning of war, and the rights of the winner, encouragednations to have strong military forces and to resort to warat the slightest excuse. There will never be peaceuntil winners and losers are tried for their crimes byneutral countries and punished. We must banish war as anoption in the settlement of disputes and conflicts betweennations. This years Saad Lecture celebrates the 10thanniversary of the establishment of the Chair of MalayStudies in Victoria Universitys School of Asian &European Languages & Cultures. This was becauseit kept them in their place

If you don't know how to read,if you're not educated, then Rosetta Stone V3 you're not going to aspire tovery much. And you can be controlled and you can be - no,you can't challenge anything. And so women were not allowedto read and be educated. So one of the things that we'veworked very hard on is girls' education around the world andwomen's education around the world, because as much as Ibelieve that women's empowerment is about running forpolitical office and all of those things, women'sempowerment first begins with educating women. So I'm a bigbeliever in the power of education, and when I leave, I'llgo back. The United States has a lot of problems in our owneducational system, a lot of problems in our public schools, and those are some of the issues that I really want to workon. And I'll leave elected politics to my fri likeStephen. (Laughter.) (Applause.)MS.BARBER: Thank you both. As you would have alreadyheard, Dr. Rice is an accomplished pianist and, as oftenhappens, though, plans do change and our lives often takevery different directions. But when thinking of what giftsto give you, Madam Rosetta Stone German Secretary, the obvious choice was thegift of a song. So I would like to present to you, on behalfof the whole college community, 12 of our very talentedyoung women, and their conductor, Mrs. ClaireGamlin.(Song was performed.)(Applause.)SECRETARY RICE: That wasbeautiful. That's my - one of my favorite songs, so thankyou.MS. BARBER: I would now like to callforward our Head Girl, Lucy Fitzsummons, to present you witha copy of a book, Madame Secretary. The book is actually thestory of Mercedes College. It's called Out Of These Stones. And of course, our history dates from 1846 through to - thebook covers the period, 1846 to 1996. But as you'd be aware,we are very proud of our heritage and the future that we areall creating as we walk in the footsteps of the Sisters ofMercy. And we're very fortunate also that while many of oursisters have moved into other ministries, there are many ofthem here this morning to join us, so it's wonderful to havethem with us too. So Mercedes is the oldest existingsecondary school in Western Australia, and we certainly hopeyou enjoy reading our history. (Applause.)So on behalf ofthe students and the staff at Mercedes College, I would liketo thank you sincerely for taking time out from your busyschedule to visit with us. We've been truly blessed. And wethank Rosetta Stone Hindi you too, Minister Smith, for including us in Dr.Rice's itinerary.

Datasolve using FCS-EPS

I have resolved to complete this history over the next couple of days. In part Rosetta Stone 1 I took the history from its origins in my reflection on Boisot's I-Space, to a quadrant model contrasting abstraction with learning/culture. In part 2 I moved on to describe a planar model which incorporated complexity and catastrophe theory. These essence of that second model was the realisation that I was talking about the nature of systems (i.e. ontology) not simply a model to understand knowledge flows and that as such the model had more general applicability. My own background was in decision support systems, I designed and built such systems for the Guinness Group, Mersk Shopping, Tootal Group and the Vesty family during my programming/design days in Datasolve using FCS-EPS which was a programming language ahead of its time, sentimental moment there.I had come to knowledge management from decision theory and strategy. One of the basic models I developed back in those dates (Datasolve had now merged with Software Sciences to create DataSciences) is shown above and just for the record this was back in the mid nineties and yes I did shown the model in Washington before and after 911. Basically the model contrasts certainty of decision making and our level of certainty in our understanding of the situation. If we are confident in both the we are dealing with the known knowns. If we know the situation but we are not sure of the consequences of our decisions then we are dealing with the known unknowns. If we are pretty certain our decisions will do no harm (an early expression of safe-fail experiments) and will help us understand what is possible then we are dealing with the unknown knowns. Then of course we have the really interesting area, both for threat and opportunity, where, when Rosetta Stone Language it comes down to we have no idea what is going on or what we should do. Now I got more and more interested in the unknown unknowns and started to play with another matrix (I hadn't yet worked on the detox programme to stop using two by twos, but in fairness I was not long out of an MBA and knew no better). I can't remember the exact details so I may have this wrong (if any reader our there has an original please let me know) but have done my best to reproduce it here. The key thing is not the content of the boxes, which never really worked, but the introduction of a distinction between known, knowable and unknowable. Now remember that the Cynefin model was, it is early days a knowledge management model. So the distinction between known and knowable was attractive. In parallel with this I was writing a chapter for Knowledge Horizons on the social ecology of knowledge management. That was still using the learning quadrant model and used movements between the quadrants to identify different culture types in organisations. Rereading it for this posting I can see it was an early phase of what became Cynefin Dynamics and has some potential for development. The quadrant model was, and remains a learning model and it this emphasises the role of language (which was also the inheritance of Boisot). For that Rosetta Stone American English chapter I took the uncertainty matrix (my name for the model that starts this post) and translated it into a matrix that balanced capability with objectives.

The best screen designers

I used to enjoy technical drawing and was self taught, investing my own pocket money in a T-square Rosetta Stone and board. It wasn't taught in Grammar School, but I was an enthusiastic carpenter and it was useful for designing furniture. I also loved the construction question at the start of geometry exams for the same reason. The point about this is that it gives you a sense of balance, of representation and also representing three dimensions in two. I have known have been architects, Printing and publishing skills. Back in school we acquired an old cold metal printing machine. You had font trays full of metal or wooden letters that you assembled backwards and stacked with wonderful tightening devices into forms that you laid into the press. With one foot you started to pedal and the rollers swept over the ink plate before coating the letters and withdrawing in time to imprint the paper that you had placed with one hand seconds earlier. As the pattern returned you took the paper out with another hand. A feat that involved considerable co-ordination and meticulous preparation. We also entered printing competitions where you were judged on evenness of type, elimination of white runs in text and such like. All of that gave you a sense of page design. To this day if I am writing marketing literature, I create the design template in Pages and write to fit within the space. A paranoid Rosetta Stone Language attention to the use of styles in word processing. This should be taught from day one in school. No carriage returns to create a line space, no changes of font sizes or colour. All of that should be styles, that way you can change things quickly, other people can use your work without reformatting. There have been times when I have wanted to garrotte colleagues who do not understand how to do this, or worst still understand how but not why! Its not something you should learn later, by that time bad habits have been formed, learn it young and stay paranoid. Object orientation, its never too early to learn the basics of this approach to system design (and it applies to humans as well as computer programs). Key concepts such as inheritance and polymorphism are easy to understand and will influence the way that people think, and the expectations they have of new tools and technologies. Its not just about re-use, its about designing at the right level of granularity whether you are thinking of organisations or software. It also helps people understand a modern social computing environment in which tools and data from multiple sources integrate in novel and different ways. Thinking in terms of applications leads to linear thinking, lack of adaptability and resilience. If anyone wants to Rosetta Stone American English add to that feel free. Remember I am talking here about about skills, many of which are not ICT specific but create core capabilities when the brain is plastic and more able to learn, that can be applied to an uncertain future. Too many schools teach current.

Byrne response to blog

Byrne response to blog (original blog entry in italics)And now that the entry has loaded:Businesses, analyst [sic], markets and the media again are focusing on the results rather than understanding the systemic nature that produces today's results. The results are Rosetta Stone Language the part that one can measure. The underlying system is something you understand by measuring the results. How would anyone get more useful information through nebulous speculation about the nature of a process than about predicting the results of that process? One of the reasons markets are so useful is that the creation from raw materials of an iPod or a pencil or a newspaper is beyond the comprehension of one human being -- and the optimal distribution is even harder. Markets let us focus on the outputs when they matter to us, and ignore the inputs when they don't -- I really don't have to care whether it's a labor dispute or an ink shortage that increases the price of a newspaper relative to other forms of amusement, as long as the price tells me I'd get a better return buying something else. Of what use is it to know the information you won't act on that underlies the information you do act on? The attraction of over a half a billion individuals engaged in today's "networks" is a business attraction motivated by economic possibilities.Awesome! A Business Attraction! Economic Possibilities! With buzzwords like these, he must be smart! I mean, I'm so slow I don't know what a 'business attraction' is. Does he mean that people are joining Myspace for corporate networking purposes, or installing Facebook apps to impress their customers? And what are 'economic possibilities'? I know what 'economic' means, and I know what 'possibilities' are, but that may be the single least meaningful way to say "People are joining social networks because they think joining social networks is something they should do." He's linking Language Learning Software cause and effect by noting that the effect of a cause is usually caused by a cause having an effect. If you reflect on Doc Searls comments above you will see a systemic failure of "business" to make progress in the fundamentals of human interaction, relationships. The same way modern "medicine" fails to make progress in leech technology. Relationships and interactions are useful, but that doesn't mean that every action should require me to navigate a sea of interconnected relationships. When I want coffee, I don't want to wait until someone with coffee decides they owe me a favor and might as well repay it with a beverage; I just want to buy it and drink it. This blogger is a pretty radical primitivist -- he wants us to regress to something more basic than barter. Businesses have been consumed by financial measures as dictated by public and private markets that measure economics. The social web is creating a new measure of business based on the fundamentals of relationships.Again, this is a meaningless string of buzzwords propelled by adolescent outrage. Of course businesses -- abstract entities that aggregate capital, labor, and information to spread risk and produce wealth for their owners -- do not make good neighbors. And your neighbors probably don't make good international oil companies or investment banks. Specialization is a very useful way to separate what we want from the world and what we want to do -- it just doesn't make sense to conflate relationships with material needs if you don't have to. The people Hindi Learning Software have known and continue to know how "business has failed them".Yes!

The offensive capability

The offensive capability would deal...had three objectives, pre-emption, preventive Rosetta Stone war and deterrence. These are words we're going to hear more about these days than we had for a long time. Preventive war, in the literature, as I understand it, means a war you launch not against a current threat but against a threat that may emerge at some point and become more difficult to deal with in the future. Therefore, your advantage is to attack it now and deal with it. That's a preventive war. The pre-emptive attack is something you do on the eve of the anticipation of being attacked by someone when you believe there's an advantage to going first. So, you pre-empt. And the third, deterrence, we are all familiar with. The problem after the Second World War with this strategy of pre-emption, preventive, and deterrence, was that the Soviet Union did the same thing we did and developed a big offense with a triad and pre-emption and preventive war didn't look so good because they went into a deterrent mode as well. So, we were in deterrent mode and so were the Soviets. And this was greeted with not a great deal of glee as a method of defending the United States against the Soviet Union. So, we have naturally tried to recapture the possibility of defense, and we have in the 60s an effort at an ABM system. But we discovered, again, in the language of the literature that the offense/defense cost/exchange ratio was not favorable. And, simply put, all that meant was that an increment of offense could be had more cheaply and easily to overcome an increment of defense. And so, deploying defenses just led to an offensive arms race. For this and other reasons, we had the ABM treaty and we had no defense. We also had no defense because we found out it was pretty hard to do. When Ronald Reagan became president, he Rosetta Stone Software once again found deterrence unacceptable and attempted to employ a defense, Star Wars, hoping that lasers had reversed the offense/defense ratio, discovered, I think, that that again was harder to do than anticipated and then, of course, the threat morphed significantly with the disappearance of the Soviet Union.George Bush, Sr. did little in national missile defense. Clinton did little in national missile defense in terms of deployment and then George Bush, I think, can be characterized as trying to recapture the day in which the United States not only had deterrence through overwhelming offensive capability but also had the capability to defend the United States by denial to prevent an attack from reaching the United States and by embracing a national missile defense which technologically, again, he hoped would work. But then, 911 happened. And 911 meant that national missile defense could not defend America because the threat was not going to come from missiles. It was not going to be a threat against which we could deny an enemy the access to the United States. It could come as we all know from all the studies of container ships and the 12 million containers that reach America. that's one way it could come. But it can come from 100 other ways as well. And we could not really expect to defend America against that. But also we were losing deterrence. And we were losing deterrence because we could not be sure if we were attacked by these terrorists that we would know Rosetta Stone Japanese from whence the attack came, and if we did, we couldn't be sure that if we went to respond that the attacker would still be there, and if we were lucky enough to find out who did it, and they were hanging around, we couldn't be sure that they'd really care very much that we retaliated, because they might be willing to die for their cause. So, deterrence did not look very good to us. We were then back in a situation in which we had no defense. By denial.

Edward Albee: Part-time pussycat

Edward Albee, without question our nation's greatest living playwright, lives just the Rosetta Stone way you might expect him to -- in a rarefied artistic ozone that feels pletely at home to him.African sculptures and 20th century European and American paintings proliferate in his TriBeCa loft, like wildflowers on a sunny hillside. An elevator opens directly to the apartment, where a flirty feline named Abigail, a part Abyssinian acrobat, insists on making friends before allowing entry into this heightened realm, in which a Kandinsky and a Chagall stare each other down, a little Picasso etching lurks on a back table, and alarming masks and seemingly animate artifacts track your every move. Famously fussy about language, Albee prefers to call himself an "accumulator" rather than "a collector," though there's nothing random about the objects in his private gallery. Asked what the display might say about his aesthetic, he dryly answers, after a meditative beat, that he "knows what he's doing." He lightly shoos away the notion of a connection with his playwriting, but the truth is probably closer to what he told his biographer Mel Gussow: "Art should expand the boundaries of the form and, simultaneously, it should change our perceptions. I despise restful art."Chances are, when he takes the stage of Royce Hall on Saturday for "An Evening With Edward Albee," a UCLA Live event that's intended to draw out his thoughts on "the power of the arts as a catalyst for change," this senior statesman of American drama will dismantle, with his usual take-no-prisoners precision, the received wisdom and shopworn pieties that are always obscuring what pure artists like himself are attempting to do.Still trim and vigorous at 80 (a hearing aid is perhaps his one visible concession to aging), Albee has a reputation for not suffering fools gladly. As someone who has seen him clip the verbally woolly wings of interviewers, I approached the Rosetta Stone Software privilege of meeting him on his home turf with a fair amount of trepidation. And despite having corrected people in the past on the pronunciation of his name -- it's Awl-bee, not Al-bee -- I misspoke soon after greeting him, and the error was gently though promptly pointed out.But this master of invective -- the man who set the theatrical world ablaze in 1962 with the emasculating marital crossfire of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" -- is, well, no offense to Abigail, something of a pussycat in person."I'm very nice until I'm crossed," Albee says with a calm courtliness. "I only get really annoyed when the situation demands it. But then my response is less anger than couth. Anger diminishes your ability to be objective. Frank O'Hara wrote a poem titled 'In Memory of My Feelings,' and that is essentially what writers are doing when they write."Rialto lore has painted Albee as quite a tyrannical overseer of his work, and he admits that's he can be a "control freak." "I insist that people do every line of the play that I have written," he says. "I have approval of my actors and my director. And design also, because I want people to see the play that I wrote. I'd rather it stand and fall on what I did than on what somebody else did."Given the intense roller-coaster ride he's had with the critics over the years, it's no wonder he feels the need to maintain a tight grip. But something in him softens when he reflects on the great talents who have brought his characters to life. And it's those luminaries who are no longer with us -- Peggy Ashcroft, John Gielgud and Uta Hagen -- who spring immediately to mind.Of course, the old Zeus fire returns when he recalls, without naming names, the three actors he "would never work with again." With a faint smirk, he adds, "Unfortunately, they all keep working, though I'm glad to see one's career is going down fast."Albee has a penchant for pungent truth-telling. In some respects, he's a more sober version of Claire, the illusion-puncturing alcoholic in his 1966 play "A Delicate Balance," who can't help remarking, while gazing at family members writhing in their protracted existential crises, "that there are so many martyrdoms here."But one shouldn't give short shrift to the Albee who's a passionate advocate of the arts, a mentor to younger dramatists and a social mentator with an incisive gift for dispelling fog. And now, after Harold Pinter's passing in December, he is one of the last of Italian Learning Software the English-language playwrights to have attained a level of cultural standing that has transcended the parameters of theater."I liked Harold a lot," Albee says. "I liked his politics, I liked his work, and I also liked that he admired Sam Beckett as much as I did.

You're probably thinking yeah, "that's what I am trying to do but where do I find an unbiased review on a learning language software?" They're actually all over the Internet. But finding out which ones are unbiased is the tricky part. In this review, I am going to give you three tips that will allow you to get the best information you need to know from the many learning language software reviews on the Internet.Stick with the facts! When I started doing a lot of research on different Spanish teaching software, it wasn't long before my head was spinning to no end! I often found myself waiting for days to get simple replies from their customer support groups and the information I found on their websites were in a lot of cases biased. If the information did not seem biased, there was no way to prove it. Which left me doing a lot of second-guessing. So I learned to stick with the facts! When I stick to the facts, I am taking very little interest in customer reviews or personal opinions that the company may have on their products. I Rosetta Stone Software want to see what the product does and what's in it! For instance, what types of features does the software have? Are these the features that can help me learn? Is there a money back guarantee? These are the types of questions you need to ask yourself every time you look at a learning language software site. The facts should be your deal eakers. If the software does not have what I am looking for, I should make a note of that and go on to the next learning language software.Look for customer reviews away from the product site!I found one of the most helpful sources of information in my search for a great learning language software review on amazon.com! Go to amazon.com and input the name of that software you're interested in, in the search box. Several listings for the product will show up with dozens and sometime hundreds of customer reviews. When you do find a website reviewing the software be sure to look for the bad reports as well as the good. I promise that there is not one software available to you that is perfect. When a review site is openly posting the bad remarks along with the good you can be pretty confident that the review you are reading is honest and probably contains some very good information for Rosetta Stone English you! Be sure to take these tips into consideration when you do your next search for learning language software reviews.

Learning to Be Chinese-English Bilingual - with the One Parent, One Language Technique

Families have different styles of teaching their kids to speak both English and Chinese. For Rosetta Stone Outlet families who have one parent who can speak Mandarin-Chinese, they can opt to use the One Parent, One Language (OPOL) method. This technique prescribes that one of the parents will speak only Chinese to the children at all times, while the other parent will speak only English to kids. This should be rigidly exercised, as consistency is key. By having one parent speak a language consistently, the children will be able to pick up what language to use with a parent. Children eventually learn to speak Chinese with the Chinese-speaking parent, and English with the other parent. In the book "7 Steps to Raising a Bilingual Child," Naomi Steiner shares some benefits of using the One Parent, One Language Technique to help a child learn Chinese. The main benefit of using the OPOL technique is that it encompasses all the problems encountered when learning a language. In the end, what is most notable about this technique is that it assures children of a huge total number of exposure to the Chinese language. Consistency is a main problem in raising a child to learn Mandarin-Chinese. Some families start a child on a language, but later on, due to assorted reasons, the exposure becomes less and less. If one parent consistently talks to a child in Chinese, the child will eventually learn the language. Also, compared to other techniques, the One Parent, One Language system is fairly simple to carry out. Upon deciding that a child will be raised bilingual, each parent can just assign to each other "You speak to her in Chinese, I speak to her in English." Some families schedule second language sessions at home. "Let's speak Chinese to each other on Tuesday nights", or weekends, or whenever. It is easier to forget when the next talk session will be.The language boundary is very easy to see. Kids will quickly get it to speak to mom only in Chinese, and only English to Dad. More so if there are extended family living nearby or making frequent calls, and they also speak to the child in Rosetta Stone Chinese the same language as the parent does, a child can easily identify that "This is Mommy's language. This is Daddy's language."When using the One Parent, One Language technique, children become accustomed to respond to the parent in the same language any time, any place. Other techniques may make a child hesitant or shy to answer a parent in Chinese when at home, or when they go out. With this technique, the child gets it is but natural to talk to a parent in Chinese wherever they are, who ever they are with. It is more orderly for a child to learn two languages at the same time when Dad speaks Chinese only and mom speaks English only. Most likely, mixing languages up is less likely to occur when the child knows English is to be used for mom only and Chinese is to be used on dad only. The OPOL system can be backed up with other language activities outside the home, such as attending Chinese camp, play dates with other Chinese-speaking playmates, etc. A Chinese-speaking baby sitter may also be of great help. If you live near a Chinese-speaking community, take your child along with you during grocery shopping, etc. so they can hear Chinese being spoken by other people as well. Introducing your child to books like Chinese Made Easy would also greatly help. One problem that may bother parents is that kids may feel that the other parent is excluded, particularly if that parent does not understand or speak the language. One recommendation for this discomfort is for one parent to speak to the child in Chinese and request them to tell the other parent something in the other language. As the other parent responds in English, he she can also ask the child to involve the other parent. An example, can be "Tell Daddy what you did today." Child then proceeds to tell Daddy in Mandarin-Chinese. Dad can then ask in Mandarin-Chinese "How about Mommy? Did she enjoy Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish the visit to the museum with you?" Then child can ask mom the question in English as well. With consistent use, the One Parent One Language technique can be a big help to children learn both Chinese and English at the same time.

How to learn a language As an adult!

As adults; learning a language is awkward and frustrating, it's like waking upRosetta Stone one day and have a third arm. Not natural and seemingly ut of place'. It will require a lot of practise to get used to the new member and there will be a period of extreme clumsiness. Welcome to the world of Adult language learning. It has been said that learning a language as an adult; can be almost physically compared to the growth of a child's mind when growing up and absorbing everyday knowledge. Children's brains are always moving, expanding and growing with complete spongelike characteristics. Imagine having an adult brain and trying to learn everything a child learns it is extremely exhausting. Which brings us to the best way to learn a language as an adult; there are no hidden secrets or magic pills just hard and persistent work.1. Buy a program. Preferably a program that has a local teacher speaking the language, not a foreigner; this should be their first language not their second! I would advise a pod cast or CD if you prefer. But you should be able to listen to it conveniently; the program needs to be accessible and a beginners level obviously. You should listen to it when you are shopping, cleaning and oddly while you are sleeping. It will have the same effect as those self help quitting programs; you want your subconscious to absorb every word. This helps you carefully start storing sounds, vocabulary and become accustomed to the words.2. Submersion. This option is not possible for everyone; but one of the most effective ways to comprehend a language as a whole. You learn about culture, history and slang; it gives you a solid foundation of how to understand the transliteration versus translation. I would advise moving to a place where you can only speak their language and hope your language survival skills kick in; but some do not have this luxury. Another option is to take a trip; and focus solelyRosetta Stone Italian on the culture and linguistics of a place. A language is best learned through hearing locals speak amongst themselves. It isn't always easy and can be very uncomfortable as well as frustrating but well worth the humiliation!3. Vocabulary. Once you have the basic greetings down and are starting to feel like a pro; get some major vocabulary sheets. These can be attained through computer programs, downloaded from the internet or found in translation dictionaries. Vocabulary will be the key; because once you are past saying ello'; forming a sentence will be a lot more difficult than you foresaw without the words to communicate. So load up on words, even if you start to struggle to remember them; they will come in handy when listening or trying to communicate an important message such police, hospital, food andor water! Don't fuss too much about grammar as that will come sooner than you want it to...4. Grammar. Now most people are not big fans of grammar in their first language versus in a foreign language. But learning to construct a sentence; really starts to make the language interesting versus frustrating. It is the moment where your brain really starts to work overtime, it is hard enough to remember when to use their, there and they're let alone knowing whether a chair is a feminine or masculine word. This is especially challenging if your first language doesn't have sexual nouns! The beauty of grammar is you soon take a giant step from knowing just words to speaking a language. This becomes a huge breakthrough and prepares you for the next step.5. Read and write. Learning the correct pronunciation is very important and the alphabet is the right way to start. Although reading and writing can often be ignored, it is vital in understanding how each individual letter sounds. It gives focus on annunciation and how words are put together; so you are no longer saying words by sound but with full understanding. The best part about being literate in another languageRosetta Stone Korean is that you will soon be able to start reading signs, books, magazines and brochures but you may not understand it the downside. Before you lose heart; remember the more practise you have at sounding out words; the buzz of the whole experience will be evident once you start finding the words that you do understand. This sparks the fire to improve and become a fluent foreign language speaker! So be brave; book up your linguistic journey and put on that grammar hat as a future in the land of language awaits you!

R. K. Narayan Attitude Towards the English Language

R. K. Narayan attitude towards the English language: a postcolonialRosetta Stone V3 posture, a utilitarian gestureAbstractThis paper is intended to examine R. K. Narayan attitude towards the English language as reflected in his essays. Narayan (19062001) was born and grown up in a period when English education was already institutionalised in the Indian Subcontinent. Like other Indian writers in English, such as Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand, he received English education and used to write in English from the beginning of his literary career up to the end. However, he is seen to have used the English language and literary form to scrutinise colonialism and depict the Indian society continually under change due to the colonial rule. A part of this endeavour seems to be evident in Narayan attitude towards the English language. Narayan position in this regard is deemed quite ambivalent and complex e is aware that English is the language of the colonist, yet he is found to have accepted it for practical reasons. That is, his attitude towards the English language appears to have resulted from and shaped by the reality prevailing in the postcolonial setting. Keywords: R. K. Narayan, attitude, English language, postcolonial posture, utilitarian gesture The study of the English language and literature in the postcolonial context seems to be densely political and cultural phenomenon?(Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffins 1989: 23) and consequently comes under the purview of the postcolonial writers. One of the fundamental assertions of postcolonialism is that the English language and literature have played a very significant role in propounding colonial ideology aimed at the survival and consolidation of the colonial rule (Walder 1998). In other words, the construction of English literary education is part of the colonial cultural design (Viswanathan 1995). Many postcolonial writers have attemptedRosetta Stone French to address the issue of cultural domination through the English language and literature. For instance, Thiong (1995) opines that the central position given to the study of the English language and literature in Africa emanates from the assumption of the cultural superiority of the West. This is why, he prescribes that the English departments should be abolished from the universities in Africa. Indian novelist Raja Rao (2000: v) states that English is the language of the intellect, not of emotion; and in India English should therefore be appropriated to the level of dialect which will some day prove to be as distinctive and colourful as the Irish or the American? Hence, postcolonial writing uses the language of the colonists but adapts it to the discourse of the colonised. It is performed by two processes: abrogation and appropriation (Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffins 1989). Abrogation stands for challenging the notion of universality as claimed by the colonists with regard to the language. Appropriation, on the other hand, is the use of the imperial language to express the cultural experience of the colonised. This is a process by which imperial English is made to encounter vernacular languages. Standard English words are used in many new meanings, and, in turn, the English language receives many new words from indigenous languages. Besides, postcolonial literature emerges out of the tension between these two pulls. Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin (1989: 39) rightly maintain?in one sense all postcolonial literatures are crosscultural because they negotiate a gap between orlds? a gap in which the simultaneous processes of abrogation and appropriation continually strive to define and determine their practice. Thus, challengingRosetta Stone English and overhauling the Eurocentric notion of language become an essential part of literary decolonisation (Loomba 2001).As Boehmer (1995) illustrates, almost all the aspects of the world of the colonised including the language of instruction and commerce were dominated by the empire.

Armenian Authorities Cracking Down On Emo Music

Young Armenians watch a performance from the Rock Rosetta Stone outlet stage at the Fête de la Musique in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia. Photograph by Onnik Krikorian/oneworld.blogsome Authorities in the Armenian capital of Yerevan are reportedly putting pressure on young fans of the punk subculture emo, claiming that the music undermines social stability and that its emotionally wrenching content is causing teenagers to become suicidal.Students are claiming that the police are conducting wardrobe checks in schools and looking for torn jeans, body piercings and black gloves, as well as any clothing in the "emo colors" of pink and black. One told EurasiaN that a rumor is going around that people who look like fans of rock music are being "closely watched"; its a common tale of a subculture being targed because of its unconventional look. (A 2009 piece on emo in Yerevan noted that there were bween 20 and 25 teenage emos in Armenia at the time.) In 2010, 13 of the 38 teenage suicide attempts across the country Rosetta Stone German were successful, and only two of the teens involved are thought to have had any association with the emo subculture. Rosta Stones Top 30 Albums Of 2010"I do not like emos, in fact. I absolutely dont like them. I do not understand or accept them," Armenian Chief of Police Alik Sargsian said in an interview with a local newspaper earlier this month, as quoted by EurasiaN. He also called them "dangerous" and said that they could "distort our gene pool."Another young emo said, "No one is forcing us; the thing is that our members are emotional and there have been cases when they attempted suicide. However, its not like it is a mass phenomenon."In 2008, young fans of emo were under attack in both Mexico and Chile, although the antagonism ce mainly from peers not the authorities. In Mexico, the subculture was a popular targ of fans of punk and rockabilly, and spurred on in part by the local on-air personality Kristoff, who would frequently go on rants against "emos." In Chile, where emo fans were Rosetta Stone Greek referred to as PokEMOnes, skinheads attacked the fans.Armenia: Yerevan Police Says Emo Music Threatens Countrys "Gene Pool" [EurasiaN]

At one point in the services history, BMG offered "10 CDs for the price of half," meaning you could g 10 albums just for buying one-half priced CD, and thats it. The total math, after shipping charges, ce out to roughly $27 for 10 CDs. Thus, we prended on the subscription forms that our suburban home was an apartment complex, created a ton of aliases and signed Rosetta Stone Greek up for the service over 25 times, raking in 250 CDs in the process. It ate up a lot of stps responding "Not Interested" to each months spotlight release mailers, but in the long run it was worth it. Share your fond memories of the music service in the comments.

After Rutherford Hayes became president

The case helped lead to the desegregation of public transportation in New York City . Arthur Rosetta Stone V3 was also involved in the so-called Lemmon slave case, in which the New York Supreme Court ruled in 1860 that slaves being transferred to a slave state through New York would be freed. During this time, Arthur joined the Republican Party, which was established by anti-slavery activists in 1854.Arthur became a member of the New York State Militia in the late 1850s, although he never saw combat. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), he was quartermaster for the state of New York, responsible for organizing food and supplies for Union soldiers. In 1871, President Ulysses Grant (1822-1885), a Republican, named Arthur the customs collector for the Port of New York. In an era of political machines and the patronage system of political appointments, Republican political boss Roscoe Conkling (1829-1888), a U.S. senator from New York, was instrumental in Rosetta Stone German helping Arthur obtain the important position, which controlled some 1,000 employees. Arthur, in turn, gave government jobs to Conklings supporters, who contributed part of their salaries to the Republican Party. After Rutherford Hayes became president, he ousted Arthur from the job in 1878 in an attempt to reform the New York Custom House and spoils system. The 1880 Presidential ElectionHayes did not seek reelection in 1880, and at that years Republican National Convention the choice for presidential nominee had delegates deadlocked between Rosetta Stone Hindi Ulysses Grant, the U.S. president from 1869 to 1877, and James Blaine (1830-93), a U.S. senator from Maine. CLAYTON COSGROVE(Labour,Waimakariri) to the Minister of Finance: What arethe Government's priorities for changes to the taxsystem? Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN (Minister of Finance): TheGovernment is engaged in a comprehensive programme of taxsimplification and compliance cost reduction. We also planto introduce a package in the 2004 Budget to deliver incomeincreases, including through the tax system, to low andmiddle-income families.Clayton Cosgrove: Has the Ministerreceived any reports on other possibilities for tax changes?[Interruption] Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN: And can I add mywelcome to Dr Brash. I have seen a report advocating areduction in the top income tax rate and the corporate taxrate to 30c in the dollar. This would deliver nothing toanybody earning under $38,000 a year.John Key: Earningless under you.Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN: I notice the spyhas not come in from the cold, just yet! This would notdeliver anything to anybody earning under $38,000 a year, and would place considerable pressure, both on the fiscalposition and on the economy where the domestic sector ismoving very strongly. It is no wonder thatNational,post-coup,is described as a bunch of derangedhaemophiliacs arguing over Rosetta Stone Italian which is the best band-aid.MrSPEAKER: That last phrase was out of order, and I ask thatit be withdrawn.Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN: I withdrawit.Dr Don Brash: Given the Ministers own preferredmeasure of the Budget balance shows the surplus in the yearto June 2003 was $5.6 billion, is he determined to continueovertaxing hard-working New Zealanders, if so, is thisrelated to his need to fund his planned election yeargiveaways?Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN: It is a bit rich, as wemight say on this side of the House, to describe a programmedesigned to deliver better incomes to low and middle incomepeople as a give-away, but tax cuts for people on manyhundreds of thousands of dollars a year as, presumably, goodeconomics.Dail Jones: Why does the Government givegreater priority in its changes to the tax system to givingtax incentives for foreigners in the film industry, whilefailing to support New Zealanders in export businesses withtax incentives such as the New Zealand First proposal for a20 percent tax rate, especially bearing in mind thiscountrys seriously deteriorating balance of paymentssituation?Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN: The film industry offersthe opportunity for substantial development of employmentand wealth creation within New Zealand. But I think if themember actually looked seriously at his proposal on taxrates, which differentiates between an exporting business ora non-exporting business, and which part of it is exportingand which part of it is not, he would find that hugecompliance costs would be created in trying to operatingdifferential tax rates in that regard.Rod Donald: Whydoes the Minister continue to refuse to give middle andlow-income workers in this country Rosetta Stone Japanese the same 6 percent taxconcession that those who earn over $60,000 currentlyenjoy?Hon Dr MICHAEL CULLEN: The roughly $79 million ayear cost of that will be far better spent if there wereother mechanisms designed to address and to assist savings.

Aperson has taken up residence in New Zealand

This change means that once a NewZealand driver licence has been issued, the overseas licenceis invalid for use in New Zealand. If an overseas driverlicence is presented to the police by someone to whom a NewZealand driver licence has been Rosetta Stone issued, the police will beable to penalise the person who commits the offence. If aperson has taken up residence in New Zealand, why arentthey required to convert to a New Zealand driver licenceimmediately or within three months as suggested by NewZealand Police and New Zealand Automobile Association?Ithas been suggested that New Zealand require new residents toconvert to a New Zealand driver licence within three monthsof arrival, as is the practice in Australia. Land TransportNZ does not know of any studies that provide evidence of thesafety benefits of this practice. Australian authoritieshave said the requirement is for administrative rather thansafety reasons. In addition, there would be enforcementproblems, as there is no requirement for drivers to carrytheir passports while driving, and hence there is no way forpolice to know how long the person has been in NewZealand. What measures are in place to educate touristsabout driving in NZ?Land Transport New Zealand hasdeveloped a highly successful brochure Whats differentabout driving in New Zealand? commended by Tourism NZ andalso available on the Land Transport NZ website. How many international studentsare involved in crashes? In 2003, international studentsrepresented less than 1% of all crash-involved drivers or136 out of about 17,000 crash-involved drivers. Whyisnt there at least some minimum period specified forexample unless the person leaves New Zealand for a certainlength of time after every visit, they are deemed to beliving in New Zealand continuously? The United NationsConvention on Road Traffic 1949 imposes constraints on whatchanges can be made. The small size of the overseasdriver problem in New Zealand makes it difficult to justifythe mandatory carrying of passports by overseas driverswhile driving. Overseas drivers represented 3.8% of allcrash-involved drivers, and 6% of all fatal and injurycrashes in 2003. There Rosetta Stone French is little information to show thatoverseas drivers are over-represented in crash statistics orat a higher risk of a vehicle crash compared to other groupsofdrivers.

Hon Bill English: ,that he and the PrimeMinister yesterday

Hon Bill English: ,that he and the PrimeMinister yesterday believed that they would get Rosetta Stone V3 away with alow-key, private apology before the failings of theDepartment of Corrections were publicly known, that the onlyreason he has organised another meeting with theKuchenbecker family is that Mr Kuchenbecker went to themedia to say that he was not happy with the apology hereceived at the private meeting, and that if Mr Kuchenbeckerhad not gone public, nothing would have happened?HonDAMIEN O'CONNOR: The Prime Minister was not aware untilyesterday that I had offered a personal apology. I had neverbeen asked whether I had apologised to the family, and I wasnot prepared to politicise the familys personalgrief.Hon Phil Goff: Is the Minister aware of a casewhere a dangerous inmate was released on parole, against theadvice of the police and without even notifying the policeor, in fact, the victims of that dangerous offender, and, when the Minister was asked to explain that, not only did hefail to apologise but also he said that he would not evencomment because he was on holiday, and that Minister was aformer Minister of Corrections, Nick Smith, in 1998?HonDr Nick Smith: Thats not true, youre making itup.Hon DAMIEN O'CONNOR: Yes, I am aware of thatsituation, and of many other situations where mistakesoccurred through the 1990s.Hon Phil Goff: I have beenaccused of making an untrue statement. I therefore seekleave to table the media statement from the SundayStar-Times of 4 January 1998, which points out that whenNick Smith was asked to talk about the case, he said that hewould not do so because he was on holiday.Madam SPEAKER:Leave is sought to table that document. Is there anyobjection?Hon Chris Carter: Now hes just onmedication.Madam SPEAKER: That member will leave theChamber if he intervenes again. [Interruption] I always givea warning, members have had it. I did not hear whether therewas any objection to the tabling of that document. Was thereany objection? There was no objection.Leavegranted.Hon Bill English: Why would the Kuchenbeckerfamily accept any further apology from the Government asgenuine, when the Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin Minister has said Mr Burtons parole was well managed , when Barry Matthews of the Department ofCorrections has said there is no blood on his hands, andwhen the Prime Minister has said it is fine overall butthere are just one or two little things to fix, why wouldthe family think the Minister was at all sincere, given thatthe Government has denied all responsibility for thisdeath?Hon DAMIEN O'CONNOR: I am prepared to meet with MrKuchenbecker in good faith. I am not prepared to judge whathe may or may not think.
