Shoe was only clue to victims of McRae crash

A small training shoe found beside the burning wreckage of Colin McRae’s helicopter was the only clue to Rosetta Stone Store child victims, emergency workers have told a fatal accident inquiry. A member of Mr Logan's team subsequently discovered a pilot's licence belonging to Mr McRae among the debris, he said, giving investigators their first evidence as to the identity of those killed. Panelists offer picture of Livingston past

Past and present united Monday at the newly constructed Livingston Student Center as the Rutgers Rosetta Stone V3 University Historical Society held a panel discussion on the history of the campus.Throughout the discussion, Livingston founders and notables served as panelists and discussed the early history of the campus, founded 40 years ago. "Livingston [as a college] doesn't exist, as far as I know, not at all," Lawrence Pervin, a former Dean of Student Affairs and retired professor of psychology, said of Livingston today. "It stopped existing a long time ago, pretty much with the beginning of centralization." Livingston College was built on land originally owned by the government that was purchased for $1 to account for the expected influx of baby boomers in the early 1960s, said Gerald Pomper, a former professor of political science. Founders envisioned this property as the "MIT of the Social Sciences." This initial vision was soon abandoned in favor of a new, more progressive model intended to be culturally relevant, educationally explorative and racially equal, Pervin said. Livingston College ushered in a new generation of minority students, particularly of Puerto Rican and African-American descent. Prior to Livingston's establishment, only about 200 non-white students had ever graduated from the University, said Melvin Rosetta Stone Italian Gary, former associate dean for Student Affairs and retired professor of psychology.Learning styles at Livingston were meant to challenge those at Rutgers College, which took structural and educational formatting from universities like Princeton, Gary said. Interview: festival director faces biggest mission he's ever had

Time of my life. Its not what you might expect from the director of a festival thats been attracting flak in recent months like footballers issue superinjunctions.Its not easy, he admits, but I didnt expect it was going to be. Its the biggest job Ive ever had. And its bigger than it normally would be, I expect, because I [only] came into it in February. But its not as big as some would like it to be. This years festival is slimmer and less starry than in recent years.Change was inevitable. Last year was The Heralds former film writer Hannah McGills last as director, and she was followed out the door by the festivals highly regarded MD Ginnie Atkinson in January. Ticket sales were 10% down last year and, with funding from the UK Film Council coming to an end and budget cutbacks inevitable in the current economic climate, financing has taken a hit. So even before Mullighan, previously head of independent film-makers network Shooting People and a freelance journalist, was appointed, it had been announced this years festival was going to be radically revamped. Mullighan was named as the producer. And then it emerged hed been made director. Programme announcements were trailed and never made. Texas required that students pass a standardized test before they graduate, and as test day approached, Farr felt a mixture of anxiety and resentment. About a month afterward, he got the news: 76 percent of his students had passed; 24 percent were told they didn't yet have the skills to graduate. Even though many were only sophomores, some of them dropped out as a result. The principal congratulated him on his scores, but Farr cried into his pillow that night. Some of those kids did not pass because I was not as effective as I needed to be. After his two years were up, Farr went to law school, as planned. He came back to Teach for America in 2001 this time in charge of training and support. By then, the organization's founder, Wendy Kopp, had begun to notice something puzzling when she visited classrooms: many Teach for America teachers were doing good work. But a small number were getting phenomenal results and it was not clear why. Farr was tasked with finding out. Starting in 2002, Teach for America began using student test-score progress data to put teachers into one of three categories: those who move their students one and a half or more years ahead Rosetta Stone Cheap in one year; those who achieve one to one and a half years of growth; and those who yield less than one year of gains. In the beginning, reliable data was hard to come by, and many teachers could not be put into any category. Moreover, the data could never capture the entire story of a teacher's impact, Farr acknowledges. But in desperately failing schools, where most kids lack basic skills, the only way to bushwhack a path out of the darkness is with a good, solid measuring stick. As Teach for America began to identify exceptional teachers using this data, Farr began to watch them. He observed their classes, read their lesson plans, and talked to them about their teaching methods and beliefs. He and his colleagues surveyed Teach for America teachers at least four times a year to find out what they were doing and what kinds of training had helped them the most. Right away, certain patterns emerged. First, great teachers tended to set big goals for their students. They were also perpetually looking for Rosetta Stone ways to improve their effectiveness. For example, when Farr called up teachers who were making remarkable gains and asked to visit their classrooms, he noticed he'd get a similar response from all of them: They'd say, You're welcome to come, but I have to warn you I am in the middle of just blowing up my classroom structure and changing my reading workshop because I think it's not working as well as it could.' When you hear that over and over, and you don't hear that from other teachers, you start to form a hypothesis. Great teachers, he concluded, constantly reevaluate what they are doing. Superstar teachers had four other tendencies in common: they avidly recruited students and their families into the process; they maintained focus, ensuring that everything they did contributed to student learning; they planned exhaustively and purposefully for the next day or the year ahead by working backward from the desired outcome; and they worked relentlessly, refusing to surrender to the combined menaces of poverty, bureaucracy, and budgetary shortfalls. But when Farr took his findings to teachers, they wanted more. They'd say, Yeah, yeah. Give me the concrete actions. What does this mean for a lesson plan?' So Farr and his colleagues made lists of specific teacher actions that fell under the high-level principles they had identified. For example, one way that great teachers ensure that kids are learning is to frequently check for understanding: Are the kids all of the kids following what you are saying? KIPP College Completion Report

The report details the college completion rates from the first two KIPP middle schools, Rosetta Stone which have been open long enough for their early classes of students to have graduated from college. This report is a significant step forward in helping us answer the 4th essential question: are our alumni climbing the mountain to and through college??Today, only 30.6 percent of Americans aged 25 to 29 have earned a bachelor’s degree. Just 8.3 percent of students from low-income families complete college by their mid-20’s.As of Fall 2010, 33 percent of students who completed 8th grade at a KIPP middle school ten or more years ago have graduated from a four-year-college. This rate is above the national average and four times the rate for students from low-income families. In addition, 5 percent of the earliest KIPP students have completed a two-year college degree and 19 percent are still persisting in college.For all of us who work at KIPP today, this is certainly a moment to recognize that we stand on the shoulders of giants. It is a testament to all KIPPsters big and small – our pioneering students Rosetta Stone Cheap and families from our first years; our founding teachers and support staff; volunteers, funders and friends; and finally, our founders, Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin.While this college graduation rate is a significant achievement, all of us at KIPP recognize that our ultimate goal still eludes us. Over 80 percent of Americans from the highest economic quartile have earned a bachelor’s degree by age 29. We believe, as do millions of Americans across our country, that demography need not dictate destiny. Our north star is to see our KIPPSters graduate Rosetta Stone Arabic V3 from college at the same rates as children growing up in more privileged communities. Achieving this goal is both a moral and economic imperative.Over time, we have learned a good deal about the challenges students from low-income backgrounds face when pursuing higher education, as well as the factors that help them succeed. Thus Ben Franklin referred to German Americans, still the largest ethnic group in America. A century later, Midwestern cities such as Cincinnati and St. Louis were mostly German-speaking. So worried were their native-born neighbors that Iowa outlawed speaking German in public and even in private conversation.Proponents and opponents of immigration agree on one thing: Learning English Rosetta Stone German V3 is crucial to success and assimilation. Yet learning a language as an adult is hard, so first-generation immigrants often use their native tongue. Historically, English has dominated by the second or third generation in all immigrant groups. Most recent immigrants recognize that they need to learn English, and about 90 percent of the second generation speak English, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Research by sociologists Claude Fischer and Michael Hout published in 2008 suggests that English acquisition among immigrants today is faster than in previous waves.Residential integration of immigrants is even more gradual.
