A recent paper by Asia:NZ considers the risks toNew Zealand from such changes and suggests strategies bywhich we can support better outcomes for new migrants aswell as continue to look forward to the countrys futureand emerging identity.The complete paper can be accessedat www.asianz.org.nz from September 27.South Asiamedia travel awards The Asia:NZ 2006 media travel awardsfor South Asia have gone to Charmian Smith of the OtagoDaily Times and Ryan Hutchings, a freelance RNZ programmemaker.Both intend to travel to India in the next fewmonths to research a number of interesting storyideas.Charmian Smith is a senior feature writer with theDunedin-based daily and Ryan Hutchings is an Auckland-basedfreelance documentary television and radio programmemaker.Bird flu documentary makes ABU finals A RadioNew Zealand documentary on Vietnams efforts to controlbird flu is one of the finalists at this yearsAsia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) awards.The Insightdocumentary entitled Wings of Ill Omen: Bird Flu in Vietnamwas written, edited and produced by Sue Ingram and wasbroadcast on December 18.Ms Ingrams trip to Vietnam toresearch the programme was funded by an Asia:NZ media travelaward in last years Southeast Asia round.The winnerfor each category will be announced at the 43rd ABU GeneralAssembly which will be held in Beijing from November 7 to9.The finalists of this years ABU awards were selectedfrom a total of 211 entries for radio and TV, the most Rosetta Stone Italian sincethe awards since it was introduced in 1964.Asiainternships for AUT journalism students Journalismstudents at AUT University will now be able to apply forinternships in Jakarta and Beijing, an initiative organisedby AUTs School of Communications Studies and supported bythe Asia New Zealand Foundation.Three annual internshipsare now available two at the China Daily in Beijing andone at The Jakarta Post. The work placements are preferablyfor AUT journalism graduates or those about tograduate.AUT's Associate Professor David Robie welcomedthe new Asia New Zealand Foundation internships, saying thiswas a significant development for AUT journalism."We areintroducing a new Asia-Pacific Journalism course next yearand the new Jakarta and Beijing internships willsignificantly strengthen our international affairs trainingopportunities."Each of the successful applicants willalso qualify for an Asia:NZ scholarship. The China Dailyalso offers a living allowance and accommodation under anexisting arrangement with the AUTs School ofCommunications Studies.The new internships also add toAsia:NZs Massey University School of Journalismscholarships that currently supports internships for Masseyjournalism graduates at the Phnom Penh Post in Cambodia andthe Shanghai Daily in China.Asia:NZ media adviser CharlesMabbett says the AUT initiative will help address the needfor more New Rosetta Stone Japanese Zealand journalists with Asiaexperience. As it says in our Preparing for a Futurewith Asia report, levels of general knowledge about Asiawithin newsrooms are low, and this is one way to try andaddress that, by developing a pool of up and comingjournalists who have spent time working in Asiancountries.
